OTHER OPTIONS: APPRENTICESHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS

Advantages.

1.As a trainee, you have the advantage of some "real world" hands-on experience. 2.You have the opportunity to learn some new skills (or practice ones you already have) while helping someone else. 3.These can be great opportunities for students and because they often come with flexible hours.

Disadvantages.

1.As the rookie, you may also be expected to do all the jobs that no one else wants; jobs that may be monotonous, boring, or considered demeaning to the more experienced crew members 2.The income for internships and apprenticeships is often less than ideal. 3.Plus, if you are apprenticed in the construction trades, there may be union dues to pay, and you'll be expected to buy your own tools and equipment. 4.Some students use an internship or apprenticeship as one step along the way before they go to college. 5. Before taking four years or more preparing for a career, they want to try out the career field and see if it is right for them. 6.Many colleges also offer internship programs for their students to gain some hands-on training before graduation. 7.This is especially true in the technical fields, like drafting and engineering. 8.But more and more, students in many other subject areas are getting practical hands-on experience as a part of their college education.

1.There are lots of bad reasons for not going to college. 2.You can come up with any number of excuses to avoid doing something if your try hard enough: **1)."I can't afford college." **2)."I'm already smart enough. I don't need any more school." **3)."My parents didn't go to college and they turned out O.K." 3.Some students use these excuses as a way of rebelling against their parents' hopes and dreams for their children. 4.Others come up with excuses just because they're tired of school after the last 12 years. 5.. But there are other students who have their life goals laid out; their career plans don't include a college education. 6.So what if a traditional four-year college education isn't for you? 7. Two other valuable options are apprenticeships and internships. 8.First, what's the difference between the two? 9.In very general terms, in both apprenticeships and internships, you are hired as a trainee and work under the direct supervision of your trainer. 10. You are beginning to learn a craft, a skill, or a profession. 11.These options also give you a chance to check out a career field on a "trial basis." 12.The two terms are virtually interchangeable today, although historically, there is a distinction between the two. 13.In the past, the term apprenticeship was restricted to mean learning a craft or a trade from a more experienced "master" craftsman. 14.The "trades" today include electrician, plumber, carpenter, cabinetmaker, and the like. 15.Historically, if you used the term internship, you were referring to being trained for a professional career after some college training. 16. In older dictionaries, the term is limited to medical students getting their hands-on training after two or three years in medical school. 17.More recently, though, internship refers to any professional field. 18.Throughout this lesson, we will use the two terms interchangeably.
