Stem

*Connects a plant's roots to its leaves and flowers *supports the plants body *transports materials between the root system and the shoot system *some store materials (water in a cactus)

steps of pollination

1. Pollen is transferred from the anther to the stigma. 2. Once the pollen is on the stigma pollen tubes begin to grow. 3. Sperm travel down pollen tubes, into the ovule, and fertilizes the eggs. 4. Once fertilized, the ovules become seeds in the fruit. 5. Seeds are dispersed and a new flower grows. 6. The cycle starts over again.

three ways seeds can be dispersed

1. animals 2. wind 3. water

Ovules

Located in the ovary. The ovule contains an egg which developes into a seed after it is fertilized.

Stamen

Male reproductive organ of flowering plants.

Ovary

The rounded base of the pistil. It contains one or more ovules. The ovary develops into fruit.

Sepal

leaves that protect the bud

Leaf

makes food for the plant through the process of photosynthesis

flower

reproductive structure of a plant that produces pollen and seeds

What is a seed and where is it located?

A seed is a fertilized egg that is located inside the ovule which is inside the ovary.

What are the two parts that make up the stamen?

Anther and Filament

What part of the plant becomes the fruit?

Ovary

What part of the plant becomes the seeds?

Ovules

Stigma

Part of the female reproductive organ that is at the top of the pistol. The stigma is sticky to capture the pollen.

Ovary

Part of the female reproductive organ which contains the eggs

Style

Part of the female reproductive organ which holds the stigma.

Petal

Part of the flower that helps attract pollinators

Anther

Part of the male reproductive organ that is where the pollen (male sex cell of angiosperms) are produced.

anther

Part of the male reproductive structure. A saclike structure that produces pollen. Located on top of the filement.

filament

Part of the male reproductive structure. A thin stalk that holds up the anther.

Filament

Part of the stamen of the flower. Holds the anther.

gymnosperm

Plants that do not produce fruits or flowers

What is the sexual reproduction of flowers?

Pollination

What are the three parts that make up the pistil?

Stigma, Style and Ovary

petal

The broad, flat, thin leaflike parts of a flower that vary greatly in color and shape. Attracts insects or other animals to the flower.

Pistil

The female reporductive part of a flower that produces ovules that become seeds and consists of an ovary, style and stigma

Pistil

The female reproductive organ of the flower. consists of 3 main parts: stigma, style, ovary

Style

The long, slender part of the pistil. It is where pollination takes place.

Ovary

The lower part of the pistil. Where the ovules are located.

Stamen

The male reproductive part of a flower that produces pollen and consists of an anther and a filament.

Stigma

The tip of the pistil. It is where pollen grains collect.

Roots

Transports the water and dissolved nutrients/minerals in the soil to the plant's stem.

cross-pollination

a reproductive process in which pollen from one plant is transferred to the stigma of another plant

Phloem

a vascular tissue that transports food molecules down to all parts of the plant

xylem

a vascular tissue that transports water and minerals up throught the plant

sepals

the outside rings of small leaves that protect the flower when it is still a bud

Receptacle

the thickened part of a stem from which the flower organs grow

self-pollination

the transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma on the same flower

Peduncle

top part of stem

Angiosperms

vascular plants that produce flowers and fruit to protect their seeds
