glycolipids

-Lipids with polar sugar groups on outer membrane surface -sugar containing lipid with carbohydrate attached

phospholipids

-phosphate heads: polar and hydrophilic -fatty acid tails: nonpolar and hydrophobic -tails touch, heads point outward

cholesterol

-scattered within the hydrophobic regions of the membrane -increases membrane stability

phospholipid bilayer

-structure of the plasma membrane -contains several different types of lipids (phospholipid, cholesterol, glycolipid) with proteins embedded in it

Channel Protein

A transport protein that forms channels that allow specific molecules to flow through

Fluid mosaic

Phospholipid Bilayer with various protein molecules floating around within it. The 'Fluid' part represents how some parts of the membrane can move around freely, if they are not attached to other parts of the cell. The 'mosaic' part illustrates the 'patchwork' of proteins that is found in the Phospholipid Bilayer.

Carrier protein

Proteins that change shape to allow a substance to pass through the plasma membrane

facilitated diffusion

a passive form of carrier transport

Sodium-Potassium Pump

an active transport mechanism that moves ions in order to achieve polarization

selectively permeable/semi permeable

cell membrane is one that allows certain molecules or ions to pass through it by means of active or passive transport.

active transport

the movement of any substance across a cell membrane with the use of energy ATP

Passive Transport

the movement of any substance across a cell membrane without the use of cell energy

Endocytosis

the process by which a cell engulfs and surrounds large substances

exocytosis

the process by which wastes are packaged in vesicles and leave the cell
