Prokaryotic Cells
What is the cytoplasm and its function?
It is a jelly-like filling in the free spaces of a cell, and holds everything in place
What is the purpose of a cell wall?
It provides protection, gives the cell shape, and prevents it from bursting in freshwater
What is the purpose of the cell membrane?
It serves as a barrier, and is selectively permeable, which means only some things can come in and out of the cell
Where is bacteria found?
Literally everywhere. In your body, on your skin, every surface and place on Earth
What do most antibiotics target?
They target ribosomes to shut down protein production
What are the two types of prokaryotes?
1. Bacteria 2. Archaea
What are the names of the basic prokaryote shapes? And explain them.
1. Cocci- are round (spherical) 2. Bacilli- are rod-shaped 3. Spirilli- Are spiral shaped
What is the cell theory? (3 parts)
1. Every living things is made up of cells. 2. Cells come from existing cells 3. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things
How many basic shapes does a prokaryote have?
3
What is a flagella and which cell has it?
A flagella is a tail that helps the cell move, most prokaryotes have a flagella, eukaryotes do not have it
What is the genetic material that is needed for reproduction and holds the instructions for making proteins?
DNA
Which one of the following cells are much more complex?: Eukaryotic cells or prokaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic cells
Do prokaryotic cells have a nucleus?
No
Is it true that prokaryotes have a nucleus?
No, prokaryotes do NOT have a nucleus
What is another name for cell membrane?
Plasma membrane
What were the first cells that appeared on Earth? Eukaryotes or Prokaryotes?
Prokaryotes
Which one of the following cells are much smaller and simpler?: Eukaryotic cells or prokaryotic cells?
Prokaryotic cells
Which one of the following cells have a cell wall?: eukaryotic cells or prokaryotic cells?
Prokaryotic cells
What produces proteins using the instructions in the DNA?
Ribosomes
Where do archaea live?
Since they are very ancient, they live in extreme environments, such as salty lakes and hot places
What are prokaryotes?
The most basic living organisms
Where does the DNA float in a prokaryote?
The nucleoid region
Do eukaryotic cells have a nucleus?
Yes
Do all cells have a cell membrane? Yes or No?
Yes, it surrounds the cell
