What are properties?

Properties are characteristics used to describe an object.

What is physical change?

A change that does not effect the substance.

Chemical Changes

A chemical change produces new substances. Burning then is an example of a chemical change. When paper burns, ashes and soot are formed along and heat and light energy are given off. You no longer have paper. Some other examples of chemical changes include the rusting of iron, the digestion of food, and the burning of gasoline in a car engine. Baking also causes a chemical change. A cake is made of flour, sugar, milk, and eggs. But eating these things without mixing and baking them is not the same as eating cake. When you bake the mixture, a chemical change takes place. The atoms of the mixture re-form to create atoms of a new substance, cake. Chemical changes occurring within your body turn the food you eat into substances your body can use. Any characteristic of a substance that tells if it can undergo a certain chemical change

What is the difference between a chemical changes and a physical change?

A physical change does not create a substance and a chemical change does create new substances.

Physical Changes

A physical changes does not produce new substances. The molecules making up the substance do not change. A physical change only changes some of the physical properties of a substance. a change in size, shape, or phase of matter. Does NOT change the identity of the substance. No new substance is formed! Examples: phase change, breaking something into a smaller size.

What is a chemical property?

Any characteristic of a substance that tells if it can undergo a certain chemical change Examples: flammability (can it burn?), sensitivity to light (like film), reactivity (does it react with other substances to produce something new?). Does it corrode?

What is density?

Density tells you how much matter is in a certain volume.

What are examples of physical properties?

Examples of physical properties include: Color, shape, size, density, melting point, boiling point, mass, volume, magnetic or not, phase (solid, liquid, gas), hardness, freezing point, etc.

True or False An example of a chemical change is when water freezes.

False

True or False When magnesium is burned, ash forms. We say this is a physical change because the magnesium looks different.

False

True or False When milk turns sour, this is a physical change because a change in odor does not indicate a chemical change.

False

What is a chemical change?

It's a change that makes a new substance.

What is mass?

Mass is the amount of matter an object contains

When we make observations in science, we describe certain physical properties of substances. List as many as you can.

Mass, state of matter, density, volume, color, shape, smell, and size.

What is matter?

Matter is anything that has Volume and Mass

What are physical properties?

Physical properties are characteristics that can be observed or measured without changing the makeup of a substance. Any characteristic of a material you can observe without changing the substances that make up the material. We use physical properties to identify matter.

Mass, weight, volume, and density are physical properties of matter.

The phases of matter are also physical properties. Other physical properties of matter include shape, size, taste, color, smell, texture.

What do all the objects you see around you have in common?

They are all made up of matter

True or False A chemical change means a new substance with new properties was formed

True

True or False When citric acid and baking soda mix, carbon dioxide is produced and the temperature decreases. This must be a chemical change.

True

True or False When platinum is heated, then cooled it its original state, we say this is a physical change.

True

What is volume?

Volume is the amount of space the object takes up.

Give an example of a chemical change and explain. .

When bread is starting to mold because there is a new substance which is the mold on the bread it looks different and smells bad

Give an example of a physical change and explain. .

Writing on the board with chalk because it's still chalk just a different shape

What are examples of chemical changes?

a change of a substance into a different substance. A new substance is formed! Iron + Oxygen + Water = Rust Examples: burning, corrosion or rusting, changing when exposed to light A chemical change can also be called a CHEMICAL REACTION

What is weight?

Weight is the measure of the pull of gravity on an object.
