Properties of Matter
Deposition
A change directly from the gas to solid state without becoming liquid
Sublimation
A change directly from the solid to the gaseous state without becoming liquid
Physical Change
A change in a substance that does not involve a change in the identity of the substance
Chemical Change
A change in matter that produces one or more new substances
State/Phase of Matter
A form that matter can take - solid, liquid, or gas.
Extensive physical property
A physical property that depends on how much of the substance there is.
Physical Property
A property that can be observed, measured, or changed without changing the substance itself.
Pure Substance
A sample of matter, either a single element or a single compound, that has definite chemical and physical properties
Reactants
A starting material in a chemical reaction
Gas
A state of matter in which it will expand freely to fill the whole of a container, having no fixed shape. Molecules are moving very fast; far apart from one another.
Solid
A state of matter in which the substance has a definite shape and a definite volume. Molecules vibrate in place
Liquid
A state of matter in which the substance has a definite volume but takes the shape of it's container. Molecules flow over one another
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Evaporation
Changing from a liquid to a gas when heat is added.
Freezing
Changing from a liquid to a solid when heat is taken away.
Melting
Changing from a solid to a liquid when heat is added.
Condensation
The change of state from a gas to a liquid
Products
The elements or compounds produced by a chemical reaction.
Intensive physical property
a physical property that remains the same no matter how much of a substance is present
Chemical Property
a property of matter that describes a substance's ability to participate in chemical reactions
Law of Conservation of Mass
the law that states that mass cannot be created or destroyed in ordinary chemical and physical changes
