restitution
- fixing what was broken, paying a fine, etc ex: An example of restitution is community service as a consequence of illegal behavior. In the example below, people who deface public or private property with graffiti may be given community service to clean up litter as a form of punishment.
Deterrence
- forms of restrictions, such as incarceration, forced to remain at home, verbal and/or physical punishment, losing privileges, etc. An example of deterrence is a car Breathalyzer. People found guilty of driving while intoxicated (DWI) for driving while impaired (DWI) may be required to install a car Breathalyzer which can measure various drugs in the breath. A positive reading (drugs detected) prevent the car from starting. A GPS system keeps tract of the car and random stops by police help to insure compliance.
Rehabilitation
- going through treatment to reduce or weaken the undesirable behavior, such as substance abuse counseling. Ex: Rehabilitation is designed to treat undesirable behaviors so they will not occur again. In the photo below taken in a prison, the women dressed in blue are sex offenders and the women in street clothes are sex offense victims. The aim of this program is to help the offenders recognize more fully the consequences of their criminal behaviors.
Punishment
- used to eliminate undesirable behavior should only be applied only when other methods have failed. -Punishment is defined as giving an undesirable consequence of behavior which weakens or eliminates the behavior. -The goal of punishment is to teach that performing a behavior is associated with an undesirable experience.
Positive Punishment
