Spectrum

A continuous range of colors of light. The visible spectrum of light consists of colors that can be seen by the human eye, red, orange, yellow, green, blue indigo, and violet

Light

A form of energy that travels in waves that a human eye sees as visible light

Rainbow

A multicolored arch of light separated into bands of color that appear when the suns rays are reflected by droplets of mist or rain

afterimage

A phantom image that remains in the visual field after the visual stimulus that caused it has been removed. The color of the phantom image is complimentary to the color of the visual stimulus

Persistence of vision

A phenomenon of sight whereby an image remains in the visual field for a fraction of a second after the visual stimulus that caused it has been removed

Visible spectrum

A range of wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see

Proportion

A relationship between quantities, the amount of one thing compared with the amount of another

Chromatography

A scientific technique for separating substances. Paper chromatography separates solutions into bands of color along a strip of absorbent paper

Prism

A solid transparent object with parallel ends of equal shape, and sides that are equal parallelograms. A prism separates lights that passes through it into a spectrum of colors

filter

A substance or device that prevents certain things from passing while letting others through

Pigment

A substance that causes matter to appear colored by absorbing certain colors of light that strike it and reflecting others

ROY G BIV

Acronym of the colors of the visible spectrum of light - Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet

Electromagnetic Spectrum

All the types of electromagnetic waves; listed in order of wavelength

Transparent

Allowing light to pass through so the objects on the other side can be seen clearly

Translucent

Allowing some light through, not clear or transparent

Mirage

An illusion caused by the refraction of light rays

What creates a rainbow

As white light passes through raindrops, the raindrops act as prisms refracting the light.

Opaque

Blocking light so that images cannot be seen through it

What conclusion can you make about colored filters

Colored filters allows certain colors of light to pass through while other colors are absorbed. Using more than one filter is like mixing colors of pigment. A darker color results as more colors are absorbed and/or subtracted

Three dimensional

Describes something that has three dimensions, length, width and depth

Monocular vision

Involving or using sight through one eye

What is the electromagnetic spectrum

It includes all the light there is including what we can see and what we can't see. Visible spectrum is all we can see.

Why are objects certain colors

Objects contain pigment that absorb some colors from white light and reflect others

How can proportion and concentration effect coloring

Proportion is the amount of pigment mixed with other pigment. Concentration affects coloring by making them darker when concentration is diluted

What will the human eye detect when viewing a red mark on a white piece of paper using a red filter? What about a green filter?

Red F + Red M = Red Red F + Green M = Black Green F + Red M = Black Green F + Green M = Green

What pigments can be used to make the colors of blue red or yellow

Since blue red yellow are primary colors, only blue red yellow can make primary color. No other mixing can make primary colors.

concentration

The amount of something in a given space

complimentary color

The color see as an afterimage of another color, complimentary colors are opposite each other on the color wheel

What is the visible light spectrum

The colors that are combined to make white light. These are the colors we see. A prism can be used to separate these colors

When color water is absorbed by blotter paper, what colors are most soluble

The colors that are mostly soluble (blue) travel farthest and those less soluble don't travel as far.

Wavelength

The distance of one wave crest to the next or from one wave trough to the next

Chromatogram

The image formed by the separation of substances through chromatography

White light

The light from a light source such as the sun, a flashlight or a light bulb, The mixture of wavelengths of various colors that appear colorless, like sunlight

Trough

The lowest point in a wave

Crest

The top of a curve or a slope. The top part of something that slopes or rises upward like a wave

Reflect

To bounce off a surface

Absorb

To keep from passing through, to swallow up or take in

Refract

To redirect or bend from a straight path. Light gets refracted (bent) at the point of contact as it travels from one medium to another

How do pigments effect the colors we see/why do you see different colors

When light shines on an object, the pigment absorbs all colors except the color of the pigment. That color gets reflected. White - all colors reflect. Black - all colors absorbed.

What is the color of sunlight

White light

Where does color come from

White light --- refracts --- exposes ROY G BIV

Image

a picture of an object formed when light rays that bounced off that object pass though a lens or reflect off a mirror

binocular vision

involving or using sight with both eyes
