How Penicillin Was Discovered In 1928, Sir Alexander Fleming was studying Staphylococcus bacteria growing in culture dishes. He noticed that a mold called Penicillium was also growing in some of the dishes. A clear area existed around the mold because all the bacteria that had grown in this area had died. In the culture dishes without the mold, no clear areas were present. Fleming hypothesized that the mold must be producing a chemical that killed the bacteria. He decided to isolate this substance and test it to see if it would kill bacteria. Fleming transferred the mold to a nutrient broth solution. This solution contained all the materials the mold needed to grow. After the mold grew, he removed it from the nutrient broth and then added the broth to a culture of bacteria. He observed that the bacteria in the culture died. Fleming's experiments were later used to develop antibiotics.

6. State the question or problem that Fleming investigated. Flemming investigated why the bacteria died when the penicillium grew on the dishes. 7. What was Fleming's hypothesis? Flemmings hypothesis was that there must be a chemical that the mold was producing that killed the bacteria. 8. How was the hypothesis tested? He isolated the substance to see if the mold would kill the bacteria. 9. Write a statement that summarizes the results of the experiment. Flemmings's hypothesis was correct, the mold was producing a chemical that was eliminating the bacteria. Because of his hypothesis or conclusion, antibiotics were developed in the future. 10. This experiment led to the development of what major medical advancement? This experiment led to the major medical advancement of antibiotics.

Smithers thinks that a special juice will increase the productivity of workers. He creates two groups of 50 workers and assigns each group the same task (in this case, they're supposed to staple a set of papers). Group A is given the special juice to drink while they work. Group B is not given the special juice. After an hour, Smithers counts how many stacks of papers each group has made. Group A made 1,587 stacks. Group B made 2,113 stacks. Find the 1. Control Group 2. Independent Variable 3. Dependent Variable 4. What should Smithers conclusion be?

Identify the - 1. Control Group- Group B who is not given the special juice 2. Independent Variable- Special Juice 3. Dependent Variable- The amount of papers stapled 4. What should Smithers conclusion be?- His conclusion should be that the special juice does not work 100%. This is because the control group had even more stacks than the group with the special juice which shows that the juice isn't 100% effective.

Homer notices that his shower is covered in a strange green slime. His friend Barney tells him that coconut juice will get rid of the green slime. Homer decides to test this out by spraying half of the shower with coconut juice. He sprays the other half of the shower with water. After 3 days of "treatment" there is no change in the appearance of the green slime on either side of the shower.

Identify the - 6. Constant- shower head 7. Control Group-The other half of the shower 8. Independent Variable coconut juice 9. Dependent Variable the slimy green shower 10. What should Homer's conclusion be? Homer's conclusion should be that his friend was incorrect and the coconut juice is not effective at all.

What are the conversions for the ladder method.

Kilo, Hecto, Deka, Basic Deci, Centi, Mili Unit Meters Liters Grams

density

Mass per unit volume ( important ) D= m over v

An exact quantity that people agree to use to compare measurements

Standard

What are the 6 scientific methods?

State Problem, Research and gather info, form hypothesis, test hypothesis, Analyze data, Draw Conclusion

If you are finding the density or the volume what do you do

You have to divide

When you convert to a larger unit where do you move to on the ladder conversions. Ex: 16dal(dekaliter)______________________ kl

You move left also known as dividing Ex: 16dal______________________ kl Since it is kilo to kl you are converting to you are moving 2 times to the left so. .1.6. So your answer would be 0.16

When you are converting to a smaller unit where do you move on the ladder of conversions. Give an example use Ex: 16kl______________________ dal(dekaliter)

You move right also known as multiplying. Ex: 16kl______________________ dal(dekaliter) Since it is kilo to deka you are moving 2 times to the right so. 16. . . So your answer would be 1600.
