What are two characteristics of a Hypothesis?

-testable -all variables must be measurable -falsifiable -must be able to have a wrong hypothesis

Experimental Group

-the group in the experiment that recieves the variable being tested, compared to the control group

What is step 5 of the Scientific method?

Repeat the whole process

Control Group

a group of subjects closely resembling the treatment group in many demographic variables but not receiving the active medication or factor under study and thereby serving as a comparison group when treatment results are evaluated

Hypothesis

a suggested explanation of the observation or a possible answer to the question posed. It provides a casual explanation or some correlation

What is a hypothesis based on?

facts

Independent Variable

the variable or experimental condition being manipulated or tested by the experimenter. It is the variable that may affect the dependent variable, how much treatment is used

Dependent Variable

the variable that will be measured, counted, or observed

Controlled Variable

those other variables that may affect your dependent variable. these controlled variables must be kept constant for all groups throughout the experiment. This is important because the underlying assumption in experimental design is that the independent variable is the one and only affecting the dependent variable.

Predictions based on hypothesis

-Much more test specific -If my hypothesis is true, then I expect to see X result in an experiment

Testing your hypothesis

-There are three ways to test hypothesis -Further observation (qualitative) -Synthesis of Data (quantivtative) -Experiments

What is step 6 of the Scientific Method?

Conclusion

What is step 2 of the scientific method?

Proposing a Hypothesis

Observations and Questions

Question your observations, that is what scientists do

Repeat the Whole process

Look for signs your hypothesis is/ is not supported

What is step 3 of the scientific method?

Making predictions based on your hypothesis

What is step 1 of the Scientific Method?

Observations and Questions

What is step 4 of the scientific method?

Testing your hypothesis

Can a hypothesis be right?

no, it can only be supported by data

What must a procedure include?

one or more levels of treatment, establish a control group, and the number of replications

What do scientists look for when people repeat labs?

patterns

What is the second part of the experiment?

procedure

Conclusion

researcher always goes to prediction for the results, is results match prediction, the hypothesis is SUPPORTED, the hypothesis is falsified if the prediction and conclusion doesn't match
