Domhoff's Model
agrees that the power elite runs the US mainly white, male, and upper class. Corporate conservative coalition has played a large role in political parties liberal labor coalition based in unions, environmental organization, and minority groups. Reflects the influence of interest groups.
capitalism
an economic system in which the means of production are largely in private hands and the main incentive for economic activity is the accumulation of profits.
socialism
an ideal type, seeks to eliminate economic exploitation. The means of production and distribution are collectively owned to meet the needs of the people, rather than maximize profits.
legal-rational authority
authority derived from written rules and regulations of political systems
traditional authority
legitimate power conferred by customs and accepted practice, authority rests in custom not personal characteristics
Pluralist Model
no single group is dominant, several conflicting groups have access to government.
teacher expectancy
refers to a teachers expectation of a students performance impacting the student's actual performance
charismatic authority
refers to power made legitimate by a leaders exceptional personal or emotional appeal
tracking
refers to the practice of placing students in specific curriculum groups on the basis of test scores
deindustrialization
refers to the systematic widespread withdrawal of investment in basic aspects of productivity. Need for labor decreases due to technology, relocation of plants to lower the prevailing wage.
credentialism
term used to describe the increase in the lowest level of education needed to enter a field.
hidden curriculum
the need for control and discipline take precedence over learning. Children must not speak until the teacher calls on them. Concentrate on their work and not work together
Mill's model
the power elite are leaders of military, industry, and governmental agencies that collectively control the fate of the US. Suggested that the economically powerful coordinate their maneuvers with military and political establishments to serve their common interests
