Stages of Writing Development
Transitional- Writing with Invented Spelling
Creates own spelling when conventional spelling is not known; one letter may = an entire syllable; words may overlay; proper spacing may not be used; as writing matures, more words are spelled conventionally; as writing matures perhaps 1 or 2 letters invented or omitted
Preliterate- Drawing
Drawing stands for writing; believes drawing/ writings= communication of a purposeful message; reads drawings as if there were writing on them
Stage 3 Name
Early Emergent- Letter-like forms
Stage 4 Name
Emergent- Random Letters OR Letter Strings
Stage 6 Name
Fluency- Conventional Spelling
Stage 1 Name
Preliterate- Drawing
Stage 2 Name
Preliterate- Scribbling
Preliterate- Scribbling
Scribbles but intended it as writing; resembles writing; holds and uses pencil like an adult
Early Emergent- Letter Like Forms
Shapes in writing actually resemble letters, however they are not actually letters; look like poorly formed letters/ unique creations
Stage 5 Name
Transitional- Writing with Invented Spelling
Emergent- Random Letters OR Letter Strings
Uses letter sequences (maybe learned from name); may write same letters in many ways; long strings of letters in random order
Fluency- Conventional Spelling
Usually resembles adult writing
