Transitional- Writing with Invented Spelling

Creates own spelling when conventional spelling is not known; one letter may = an entire syllable; words may overlay; proper spacing may not be used; as writing matures, more words are spelled conventionally; as writing matures perhaps 1 or 2 letters invented or omitted

Preliterate- Drawing

Drawing stands for writing; believes drawing/ writings= communication of a purposeful message; reads drawings as if there were writing on them
