Managers seeking to lead organizational change can benefit from a simple but helpful model. He recommends that any planned change be viewed as a process with the three phases. Phase 1 is unfreezing—preparing a system for change; phase 2 is changing—making actual changes in the system; and phase 3 is refreezing—stabilizing the system after change. In today's fast-paced organizational environments, we can also talk about another phase called improvising—making adjustments as needed while change is taking place.
