Intraplate, hotspot volcanism

Caldera

Is a volcanic feature formed by the collapse of a volcano into itself, making it a large, special form of VOLCANIC CRATER. A caldera collapse is usually triggered by the emptying of the MAGMA chamber beneath the volcano, as the result of a large volcanic eruption. If enough MAGMA is erupted, the emptied chamber will not be able to support the weight of the volcanic edifice(the mountain) above. Fractures will form around the edge of the chamber, usually in a roughly circular shape. These ring fractures may in fact serve as volcanic vents. As the MAGMA chamber emptied, the center of the volcano within the ring fractures begins to collapse. The collapse may occur as the result of a single massive eruption, or it may occur in stages -/ the result of a series of eruptions.

Pillow lavas are volumetrically the most abundant type because they are erupted at mid-ocean ridges and because they make up the submarine portion of seamounts and large intraplate Volcanoes, like the Hawaii-Emperor seamount chains. Round rocks (Basaltic Composition) are lavas that contain characteristic pillow-shaped structures that are attributed to the extrusion of the lava under water, or subaqueous extrusion.

The Mount Pelée eruption of 1902, mixture of hot air and ash, was a ?

Pyroclastic flow

Vulcanian Eruption 2 special types -Pelean type Eruption -Vesuvian Eruption

Relatively small. Its violent explosions of viscous lava create columns of ash and gas and occasional pyroclastic flows. (Nuee Ardente ) Pelean eruptions are named for the destructive eruption of Mount Peleé on the Caribbean island of Martinique in 1902. -Saint Pierre was the largest city in Martinique and one of the largest in the Caribbean. Population of 26,000 only 2 survived. The fluidized slurries produced by these eruptions are heavier than air but are of low VISCOSITY and pour down valleys and slopes at great velocities. As a result, they are extremely destructive. ( an island and French overseas department in the LESSER ANTILLES Island ARC of the Caribbean- curved chain of Volcanoes) -subduction zone Vesuvian type Eruption -characterized by the ERUPTION of MOUNT VESUVIUS, Italy A.D 79' that led to the burying and destruction of the Roman Cities of POMPEII and HERCULANEUM. Lava VISCOSITY increases as?

Silica content increases and lava temperatures decreases

Strombolian Type Eruptions

Slightly more explosive type of Eruption DUE to a slightly HIGHER VISCOSITY. Slightly more SIALIC Slightly more COOLER -gas cannot escape the lava quite as easily as they did with the Hawaiian Style Eruptions. CINDER CONE

Composite Volcanoes

Some of the Earth's grandest mountains are COMPOSITE VOLCANOES-sometimes called STRATOVOLCANOES They are typically STEEP-SIDED, symmetrical cones of large dimension built of alternating layers of lava flows, volcanic ash, cinders, blocks, and bombs and may rise as much as 8,000 feet above their basins. Some of the most conspicuous and beautiful mountains in the world are composite Volcanoes, including MOUNT FUJI in Japan, MOUNT St. HELENS AND MOUNT RAINIER in Washington.

The tendency for variations in current velocity to SEGREGATE sediments on the basis of particle size is called __________.

Sorting

In what tectonic setting would you expect to find INTERMEDIATE igneous rocks?

Subduction zones

In 1816, known as "the year without a summer," summer frosts and snowstorms occurred in the Northern Hemisphere as a result of?

Sunlight blocked by debris in atmosphere from eruption of tambora.

Lahars

Superheated mudflow generated by mixing volcanic ASH WITH WATER. The Colombian volcano NEVADA DEL RUIZ is an active STRATOVOLCANO with history of generating deadly volcanic MUDFLOWS (LAHARS) from relatively small-volume Eruptions. -the young village of ARMERO was built directly on top of the 1845 mudflow deposit. Over the ensuing years, ARMERO grew into a vibrant town with over 27,000 residents. On NOVEMBER 18, 1985, history repeated itself for the third time in 400 years, with another eruption and another DEADLY LAHAR racing down the River Lagunillas. This time, over 21,000 people were killed, including most of the resident of ARMERO. With proper planning, this tragedy could have been averted.

Shield Volcanoes

The third type of volcano, are built almost entirely of FLUID LAVA FLOWS. Flow after flow pours out in all directions from a central summit vent, or group of vents, building a broad, gently sloping cone of flat, domical shape, with a profile much like that of a warriors shield. They are built up slowly by the accretion of thousands of highly fluid lava flows called BASALT LAVA that spread widely over great distances, and then cool as THIN, gently DIPPING SHEETS. Some of the largest Volcanoes in the world are SHIELD VOLCANOES. The Hawaiian Islands are composed of linear chains of these Volcanoes including KILAUEA AND MAUNA LOA on the island of Hawaii -two of the world's most active volcanoes. -the floor of the ocean is more than 15,000 feet deep at the bases of the islands. As MAUNA LOA, the largest of the shield Volcanoes (and the world's largest active volcano), projects 13,677 feet above sea level, its top is over 28,000 feet above the deep ocean floor. In some eruptions, basaltic lava pours out quietly from long fissures instead of central vents and floods the surrounding countryside with lava flow upon lava flow, forming broad plateaus. Lava flows of this type can be seen in Iceland, southeastern Washington, eastern Oregon, and southern Idaho. Along the Snake River in Idaho, and the Columbia River in Washington and Oregon, these lava flows are beautifully exposed and measure more than a mile in total thickness.

Acid Rain is different

To generate electricity we BURN COAL. Contains IRON SUFIDE. H2O ( water vapor) + SO2(sulfur dioxide) + O (oxygen) = H2SO4 (sulfuric acid) All this Weathering creates SOIL(dirt) -once this soil is created, it may then be transported "EROSION" Major way this is transported is through RUNNING WATER-RIVERS

The principle of superposition states that _________.

Undistirbed sedimentary layers get progressively younger from bottom to top.

Pahoehoe

Very smooth, ROPEY looking lava, flows easily. Still retains a lot of dissolved gases. (SHIELD Volcano)

Pahoehoe

Very smooth, Ropey looking lava, flows easily. Still retains a lot of dissolved gases. (MAFIC) (SHIELD volcanic)

Lava Domes

Volcanic or Lava domes are formed by relatively small, bulbous masses of lava too viscous to flow any great distance; consequently, on extrusion, the lava piled over and around its vent. A dome grows LARGELY by expansion from within. As it grows it's outer surface cools and hardens, then shatters, spilling loose fragments down its sides. Some domes form craggy knobs or spines over the volcanic vent, whereas others form short, steep-sided lava flows known as "COULEES." VOLCANIC DOMES commonly occur within the craters or on the flanks of large COMPOSITE VOLCANOES. The nearly circular Novarupta Dome that formed during the 1912 eruption of Katmai Volcano, Alaska, measures 800 feet across and 200 feet high. - The INTERNAL STRUCTURE of this dome-defined by LAYERING of lava fanning UPWARD and OUTWARD from the center - indicates that it grew largely by expansion from within.

The probable source of Earth's oceans and atmosphere is?

Water and atmosphere escaped from Earths interior in volcanic eruptions.
