Multiplication of 10^x moves the decimal to the...

10^x moves the decimal point to the RIGHT EXAMPLE: 2 x 10^2= 200 Multiplying by -2 moves it in the opposite direction because it's the same as dividing it ... 2 x 10^-2= .02

What are the steps for using test cases? 1-3

1: what possible cases are allowed? Before you start solving, make sure you know what restrictions have been placed on the problem in the question stem. 2: choose numbers that work for the statement. Pause and remind yourself that you are only allowed to choose numbers for each statement that make that particular statement true. 3: try to prove the statement insufficient. Value: - sufficient: single numerical answer - insufficient: two or more possible answers Yes/no: Sufficient: always yes or always no Not sufficient:? Maybe or sometimes yes, sometimes no.

How do you calculate standard deviation?

First, you need the mean, and then we calculate the square value of each number on the list minus the value of the mean. Then take the sq root of the average of those squares of differences of each term from the mean. NOTE: this is too hard and the GMAT won't make you do it. You just need: 1. The values of all the numbers in the set 2. And subsequently the mean

ADDING the same number to both the numerator and the denominator brings the fraction CLOSER To 1, regardless of the fraction's value.

If the fraction is originally smaller than 1, the fraction increases in value. 1/2, (1+1/(2+1) = 2/3, -> 1 50%-> 66% If the fraction is originally larger than 1, the fraction DECREASES in value as it approaches 1: 3/2> (3+1)/(2+1)=4/3 150%->133%

If you increase the NUMERATOR of a fraction, while holding the denominator constant, the fraction.... (Increases or decreases?) in value

Increases! Example: 1/8<2/8<3/8<4/8

How do you find the average of a list of consecutive integers?

Last+first/2=average of consecutive integers

New Percent = ? Example: If the price of a $30 shirt is decreased by 20%, what is the final price of the shirt?

New percent = new value/ original value (80/100)= (x/30)

How would you organize this question before starting the problem? At a loading dock, each worker on the night crew loaded 3/4 as many boxes as each worker on the day crew. If the night crew has 4/5 as many workers as the day crew, what fraction of all the boxes loaded by the two crews did the day crew load? 1. 1/2 2. 2/5 3. 3/5 4. 4/5 5. 5/8

OR PICK SMART NUMBERS: Let the day crew have 5 workers they do 4 boxes in a day - they do 20 boxes a day Night crew have 5(4/5) = 4 workers they each do 3 boxes so they do 12 boxes a day So 20 boxes/ total boxes (20+12)= 20/32 = 10/16 or 5/8

What is the choose smart strategy???

Step 0: recognize that you can choose smart numbers. The problem talks about some values but doesn't provide real numbers for those values. Rather, it uses variables or only refers to fractions or percentage. The answer choices consist of variable expressions, fractions or percentage. Step 1: Choose smart numbers. Follow all constraints given in the problem. Careful with: - If you have to pick for more than one variable, pick different numbers for each one. If possible, pick numbers with different characteristics (one even, one odd, etc.) - Follow any constraints given in the problem, you may be restricted to positive numbers or to integers, for example, depending upon the way the problem is worded. - Avoid choosing 0, 1, or numbers that already appear in the problem. - Choose numbers that work easily in the problem. Typically, 100 is often the best number to use for percent problems. Step2: Solve the problem using your chosen smart numbers. - Wherever the problem used to have variables or unknowns, read the problem as though it now contains the real numbers that you've chosen. Solve the problem arithmetic ally and find your target answer. Step 3: Find a match in the answers. 1. Pick the matching fraction or percent in the answers or 2. Plug your smart numbers into the variables in the answer choices and look for the choice that matches your target.

Interest formulas

Total amount= P(1+(r/n)^nt) P= principal R= rate N= number of times per year t = number of years

RATIOS, Key Concept: A company sells only two kinds of pie: Apple pie and cherry pie. What fraction of the total pies sold last month were apple pies? 1. The company sold 460 Pies Last Month 2. The company sold 30% more cherry pies than apples pies last month.

When a question asks for relative value, not a concrete one, you don't need as much info in order to solve. The question is asks what fraction of the total pies sold were apples pies. A= Apple C= Cherry a/(a+c)= ? Statement 1: tells us that the total number of pies sold was 460, so a+c=460 A/460 =? Well... We still don't know A... SO INSUFF Statement 2: indicates that the company sold 30% more cherry pies than apples pies; in other words, the number of cherry pies sold was 130% of the number of Apple pies sold. NOTE: 30% MORE ... Dood read these carefully. 30% MORE means and always means 1.30 So, 1.3a=c Now, plug in for c... A/ (a+1.3a)= a/ 2.3a.. BOOM 1/2.3 gottums... NOTE: if the question asked for a concrete number we would need both to solve.. But since it doesn't we only need the abstract one...

Division of 10^x shifts the decimal to the...?

X/10^x =moves the decimal point to the LEFT. 2/10^2=.02 But note 2/10^-2= 200

To compare fractions you can cross multiply... EXAMPLE: which is greater, 7/9 or 4/5?

You can do 7*5 = 35 and 9*4= 36 35<36 Therefore 7/9<4/5

When doing a problem make sure you scan the answer choices... Why?

You may notice variables in the answers... Indication you should plug in numbers!!!!

If you increase the DENOMINATOR of a fraction, while holding the numerator constant, the fraction... (Increases or decreases?) in value.

Decreases ... 3/2 > 3/3 > 3/4 > 3/5 > 3/5 > 3/6 .... To 0

How do you rephrase this question? Six shipments of machine parts were shipped from a factory on two trucks, with each shipment entirelyon one of the trucks. Each shipment was labeled either SI, S2, S3, S4, S5, or S6. The table shows the value of each shipment as a fraction of the total value of the six shipments. Ifthe shipments on the first truck had avalue greater than 1/2 of the total value of the six shipments, was S3 shipped on the first truck?

First rephrase it to read that the second shipment must be less than half of the value. Because we know that the first shipment is more than half of the value. Total sum is 60/60. Given fact: Value of shipments on first truck > 30/60. Question- was S3 shipped on first truck? 1)S2 and S4 were shipped on the first truck. Sum of S2 and S4-21/60. Anything that makes the sum more than 30/60 would counter. If S2 were also on first truck then also the value of shipment becomes more than 30/60 and if S3 were also on first truck then also the value of shipment becomes more than 30/60. Hence insufficient. 2) S1 and S6 were shipped on the second truck. Sum of S1 and S6-21/60. Now the key thing here is that the value of shipments on second truck has to be less than 30/60. So if we add S3 on second truck, the value of shipment becomes more than 30/60. Hence it clearly implies that S3 is on first ship only.

To multiply decimals...

Ignore the decimal point until the end. Just multiply the numbers as you would if they were whole numbers. Then count the total number of digits to the right of the decimal point in the starting numbers. The product should have the same number of digits to the right of the decimal point. 0.02 x 1.4; Do 2 x 14= 28 Now count digits to the right of the decimal for each number and move the decimal to the left. 0 2 4 > 3 digits 0.028
