Audience

The readers of or listeners to a text. This can apply yo an individual or group.

Purpose

The reason why a text has been written and what the writer wants to achieve

minor sentence (sentence Varity & grammar)

a word or phrase that works a sentence but does not fit grammatical requirements to be one

complex sentence (sentence Varity & grammar)

contains a main clause, plus one or more subordinate or dependent clauses

declaration- makes a statement interrogative- ask a question exclamatory- express a strong emotion imperative- direct command or request

idiom

definition: a group of words in a fixed order that has a particular meaning that is different from the meanings of each word on its own Example: "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bus." Purpose: can amplify messages in a way that draws a readers in and helps to awaken their senses

oxymoron

definition: a phrase that combines two words that seem to be the opposite of each other Example: "the food was awfully good." Purpose: to make certain word combinations more thought-provoking to stand out

euphemism

definition: is an innocuous word or expression used in place of one that is deemed offensive or suggest something unpleasant Example: "passed away" instead of "died" Purpose: to manipulate the meaning of a word or phrase to make them appear more pleasant

juxtaposition

definition: the act or an instance of placing two or more things side by side often to compare or contrast or to create an interesting effect Example: "the sweet and sour sauce." Purpose: to encourages the readers to make comparisons otherwise ignored or unapparent

symbolism

definition: the idea that things represent other things Example: "red roses symbolizes love." Purpose: to explain an idea or concept to their readers in a poetic manner without saying it outright

assonance

definition: the repetition of vowel sounds in words that are close to each other in a sentence or phrase Example: "his tender heir might bear his memory." Purpose: to create rhythm in text

anaphora

definition: the repetition of words or phrases in a group of sentences, clauses, or poetic lines Example: "every breath you take and every move you make. Every bond you make. Every step you take." Purpose: to evoke emotion, drive emphasis, or nudge reader towards their own emotional imagining

pathetic fallacy

definition: the use by a writer or poet of words that give human feelings or qualities to objects, nature, or animals Example: "the sun is smiling upon him" Purpose: often used as a tool to enhance imagery and emotion in a text

alliteration

definition: the use mainly in a poetry, of the same sound or sounds, especially consonants, at the beginning of several words that are close together example: "the boy buzzed around as busy as a bee." purpose: to provide an audible pulse that gives a piece of writing a lulling, lyrical, and/or emotive effect

Epistrophe

definition: when a certain phrase or word is repeated at the end of sentences or clauses that follow each other Example: "and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." Purpose: creating emphasis and creating rythm

lexical field (lexical choice)

describes the way certain words in a text relate to or seem to be about, the same thing or idea
