-Spain didn't have their army or navy ready so the war was pathetically one-sided. -George Dewey led a US naval squadron into Manila Bay, Phillipines in May 1898, and destroyed the anchored Spanish in an easy fight that only wounded 7 Americans. -By August, Manila was occupied by US troops.

-renounces Spain's claim to Cuba and gets the US Guam and Puerto Rico. -transfered authority of the Philipines to the US for $20,000,000. -Spain's defeat turned their attention away from over seas and toward their own domestic needs. -the US became a world power with overseas possessions and a new stake in international politics.

-the Spanish Caribbean fleet occurred under Adm. Cervera and was located in Santiago. -an army of troops and volunteers under Gen. Shafter (and Teddy Roosevelt) landed near Santiago and forced Cervera's fleet out of the harbor. -Cervera tried to escape in July along the coast, but his ships were blown up or being sunken by the US. -Santiago surrendered to Shafter on July 17, which ended the war.
