How does the apparition of the banquet affect Alonso and his retinue? How is the banquet used as a symbol? Why aren't the men allowed to eat the food? Is this an effective moment for Ariel to accuse them of their sins?

It affects Alonso and his retinue because they go in starving and ready to plot but instead are met with a threatening harpy/Ariel and become fearful. the banquet symbolizes the last supper and the feast before they plan on killing Gonzalo. The men don't eat the food for as they are about to Ariel appears and threatens them pulling their attention away from their hunger. this is effective for Ariel because it allows the men to be fearful and guilty of themselves.

Is it surprising that Caliban willingly worships Stephano and desires to give him control of the island when he resents Prospero for usurping what he considers his rightful claim to the island? What does this show about Caliban?

Its not surprising because he did something similar with Prospero when he came to the island; the only reason they are not on good terms is because he tried to rape Miranda. It shows that Caliban will follow anyone as long as it appears that they are strong and it benefits him in someway.
