Motivation factors

relate to the type of work being done. they offer a sense of achievement, recognition, challenging work, responsibility and opportunities for advancement.

*REMEMBER*

under this theory you can not motivate your workers until you have satisfied hygiene factors. Also hygiene factors DO NOT motivate, they only stop dissatisfaction from occurring.

Applying herzberg's theory

* A MANAGER MUST USE A TWO-STEP PROCESS STEP ONE: requires them to eliminate all factors that cause dissatisfaction amongst employees. Meaning they must make sure they are satisfying all the hygiene factors.

Motivators are higher order needs. They include:

-recognition -responsibility -advancement -achievement -challenging -the work itself

Examples of hygiene factor:

-pay -working conditions -company policy -relationship to supervisor -relationship to fellow employees

Hygiene factor

are lower level/order needs that are usually external and relate to the working environment

Applying herzberg's theory

STEP TWO: requires the introduction of motivating factors for example giving a team member greater responsibilty
