Programmable sensor
A blank TPM sensor supplied by aftermarket companies
Scan tool
A diagnostic tool that communicates with vehicle's ECU through OBDII
Reflash
A method to recalibrate software for indirect TPM systems
Sensor ID
A number assigned to each direct valve TPM sensor
Clamp in sensors
A type of sensor that is installed by torquing a hex nut on the metal valve stem
Banded sensor
A type of sensor used by Ford with a cradle and strap around the wheel. Discontinued in 2009/10.
Reset
Another term for relearn, but used regarding tire pressure
Relearn
Communication of the TPM sensor data, components and receivers to the ECU (stationary, auto, OBDII)
Placard
Decal on inside of vehicle's driver door, shows tire pressure information
Cold pressure
When a vehicle is parked and tire pressure can be checked with tool or gauge
Direct system
Most common design used by majority OE's
Original equipment (OE) sensors
Pre-programmed with single software protocol for the individual TPMS
Sleep mode
Sensor battery life is conserved during periods of time vehicles are not being used
Battery life
Sensors have an internal lithium ion battery which cannot be replaced. Typical life is 70-80 miles
Diagnostic trouble code DTC
Similar to check engine light but codes are specific to TPMS
Data link connection (DLC)
The access port required on all vehicles (also called OBDII)
Ambient
The outside temp. of air
Sensor programming
The process of copying an existing protocol from a working or loading the OE protocol from a TPMS tool
Radio frequency (RF)
The radio wave specified by the FCC for car manufacturers TPMS in North America (315 or 433 MHZ)
