Unit 4: Multiple Representations
inequality
A mathematical sentence that shows the relationship between quantities that are not equivalent.
equation
A mathematical sentence that shows two expressions are equivalent.
variable
A symbol used to represent a quantity that can change.
Non-Proportional
The relationship between two ratios with a rate or ratio that is not constant (not equal ratios)
Proportional
The relationship between two ratios with a rate or ratio that is the same.
Direct Variation
a linear relationship between two variables, x (independent)and y (dependent), that always has a constant unchanged ratio, k, and can be represented by y = kx
Linear Relationship
a relationship with a constant rate of change represented by a graph that forms a straight line
Constant of Proportionality
the constant value of the ratio of two proportional quantities x and y; usually written y = kx, where k is the factor of proportionality. Using a table it is the ratio of an output over its corresponding input.
Rate of Change
the relationship between two quantities that are changing. The rate of change is also called slope. rate of change=change in the dependent variable/change in the independent variable.
Y-Intercept
y-coordinate of a point at which the relationship crosses the y-axis meaning the x-coordinate is equal to zero, denoted as b in y = mx + b
