UNIT 7: THE RESURRECTION, GREAT COMMISSION, AND ASCENSION
In Jn 21:15-17, what did Jesus say to Simon Peter? Why was this necessary? How does the Catholic Church understand Jesus's commands to Peter in this passage?
"Do you love me?"x3 and to "Tend my sheep". This is necessary to take back Peter;s denial x3. The Catholic Church understands Jesus' commands to Peter in this passage as Jesus giving Peter the position of Pope and telling him to take care of His disciples
What is the most direct statement by an Apostle of Jesus's divinity in the Gospels, and who made this statement?
"My lord my god" by Thomas
Be able to recognize various meanings of the Resurrection, as discussed in the textbook (p. 214), Msgr. Pope's article "Fearful Yet Overjoyed...", and our own classwork.
-Proves Jesus' claim to being God's son (His divinity) -Gives us new life that is filled with hope and excitement -The promise of our eternal life with God -Confirms Jesus's teachings (establishes His credibility) -"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Phil 4:13) -Proof of future judgement (Second coming, Parousia, Final Judgement) -He could return at any time -Fulfills many OT prophecies -Accomplishes our salvation and saves us from sin for a better life with God -"Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory." (quote from the Mass) -Establishing the fullness of His kingdom in Heaven → Believing in Him (obey, faithfully follow) leads to entering that kingdom with Him -Lead us to follow Him to Heaven (connected to His Ascension also) -Gives me a greater awe of Jesus -Reveals that Jesus's mission was not complete yet → Came back to continue the mission -Brings comfort regarding the idea of death, because Jesus conquered it -We don't have to fear it (completely) -Good things can come out of evil → Everyone thought it was over, but then Jesus came back -Gives comfort to His disciples, and reinvigorates them to perform the mission they've been given - Disciples includes us!!! -Gives hope/assurance that we will see those we love again -Mr. Morzen (shortly after his sister died): "I will see my sister again." -Shows that Jesus has an ongoing role in our lives -Continues to provide blessings -Remains a role model for us, especially in how we treat others (love each other, including our enemies, as Jesus showed us -- a love that challenges, forgives, and sacrifices) -Because of the Resurrection, Jesus is always with us, so we should always do what Jesus would have us do (He is alive, so He still has expectations and hopes for us) -More likely to follow His teaching to give up material things, because Jesus gave up His life but ended up being glorified/rewarded because of His sacrifice
Why did Jesus ascend? (He could have stayed with His followers on earth; why didn't He?)
Jesus ascends into heaven to be with His Father. That gives us hope that we also will go to Heaven and be with God the Father. We're disciples, which means "followers". So we should follow Jesus, wherever He goes, and do whatever He does. If He doesn't ascend, then we might not rise up to our mission on earth → we might assume that Jesus will do it all for us
Which one person discovered the empty tomb in all four Gospels?
Mary Magdalene
1st person to see resurrected Jesus? How does this person finally recognize Jesus?
Mary Magdalene; calling her by name
Great Commission (Mt 28:18-20): What does Jesus authorize and empower His Apostles to do? Where will this mission occur?
To go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey; This will occur across all nations
Is Thomas the only Apostle who doubts the reports of Jesus rising from the dead and presenting Himself alive to other people?
no
