What is an implicit bias test?

a bias against a certain group that is not necessarily conscious of their own beliefs -people will have different social contexts so they grow up with those beliefs so they do not know that it may be wrong -you were taught your whole life that black people are bad, so you tie between bad things with black people -accident police shootings where cops kill black people b/c they believe they are bad

What is a superordinate goal?

a very large goal that both groups have in common and work together to achieve it -"the enemy of my enemy is my friend"

What is discrimination?

action based on prejudice -prejudice is the belief and discrimination is the action to that belief

What is in-group bias?

anyone that we associate that is in our group -school, religion, gender, school grade, country, clique group -we tend to favor the people that is in our in-group

What is contact theory?

contact between hostile groups will reduce animosity if they are made to work to a superordinate goal -how do we make this long term? Is it possible?

What is the out-group bias?

everyone else that is not part of the group that you are in

What is the other-race effect?

how we tend to see the uniformity in other groups -we think they look more similar than our own people -all asians look the same? to other asians, they do not look the same at all

What is stereotype?

overgeneralized idea about a group of people -we take something that may true for some people, but then we apply it to everyone -creating a self-fulfilling prophecy

What is homogeneity bias?

since people look the same, they must all act the same and are the same types of people

What is ethnocentrism?

type of prejudice; you believe that your own group is the best and you have negative beliefs to other groups

What is prejudice?

undeserved attitude towards a group of people -it is a belief

What is mirror-image perceptions?

when each group views the other as the same way

What is the just-world phenomenon?

when we believe that the world is just and how people act is what people deserve -bad people deserve bad things to them

what is scapegoat theory?

when we blame a problem to another group when they have no affiliation to the problem itself; they had nothing to do with the problem -in-group people blaming out-groups -if you manage to create the classification of out-groups being bad, the out-groups will deserve bad things to them; makes people believe that it is okay

How are we able to convince people?

-you have to find a common bond in order to get them on their side; make it feel that you are on their side -sometimes you have to admit that you are wrong for something; it will make you seem more open
