James A. Garfield

-20th president, 1881 -Republican Party -VP: Chester Arthur -strengthened federal authority over the New York Customs House, Star Route Scandal came about after he assumed presidency, assassinated by a deranged disappointed office seeker -4...Garfield came into office with a mindset of cleaning up post-corruption. He assumed a stricter watch over businesses, which helped Arthur out some.

Chester Arthur

-21st president, 1881-1885 -Republican Party -no VP -signed the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act, signed the Chinese Exclusion Act, Star Route Scandal -3...Arthur didn't expect Garfield to be leaving office, obviously, therefore he was somewhat unprepared. He took on a lot of responsibility and he made some actions on the spot, in my opinion.

Grover Cleveland

-22nd president, 1885-1889 -Democratic Party -VP: Thomas Hendricks -Presidential Succession Act, concerned about labor and economic prosperity, Dawes General Allotment Act, vetoed the Dependent Pension Bill -4...Cleveland understood that the only way America could support themselves for survival is through making products and selling them, in order to purchase more necessities to produce more. And, he knew that couldn't happen if workers never got along with the government.

Benjamin Harrison

-23rd president, 1889-1893 -Republican Party -VP: Levi Morton -Berlin Conference of Samoan Affairs; added North/South Dakota, Montana, and Washington; Dependent Pension Bill 5...Harrison continued to help America grow not only economically, but also geographically. During his presidency he added 4 new states, which allowed for more land, which allowed for more people, which allowed for more jobs.

Grover Cleveland (2nd Term)

-24th president, 1893-1897 -Democratic Party -VP: Adlai Stevenson -US Treasury Gold Reserve falls below $100M, Panic of 1893, Sherman Silver Purchase Act -2...During his second term, Cleveland did not accomplish much at all, however, he did solve the currency problem. The economy had been prospering for quite a while and it was, naturally, time for a recession. The Panic of 1893 struck and he only tried to fix it by the SSPA.

William McKinley

-25th president, 1897-1901 -Republic Party -VP: Garrett Hobart, Theodore Roosevelt -Dingley Tariff Law, Volunteer Army Act, US declared war on Spain -3...After the recession, America began on the track to prosperity once again, and foreign affairs became an issue. The US became greedy and that cause strains on overseas relationships. However, he did help the military out by lowering restrictions so that anyone who wanted to enter the army would have an easier time doing so.
