UTI: Urinary Tract Infections
What are the risk factors for men to get UTIs? What is a risk factor for women?
BPH, catheters, obstruction, impaired immune function
what is vesiculoureteral reflux?
Children: *UTIs are uncommon*. If present, then one should consider the possibility of an underlying *anatomic abnormality*. *Vesicoureteral reflux*, in which urine from the bladder is refluxed up the ureters and back to the kidneys, may be the underlying etiology.
Who is affected more by urinary tract infections? Why?
• Young women: Sexual intercourse is the most common risk factor • Older women: Incidence and recurrence are both increased after menopause, likely related to hormonally-associated mucosal changes. Urinary incontinence, antibiotic exposure, and a history of a previous UTI are risk factors. Sexual intercourse also remains a risk factor.
