What is Beauty?

"The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives the passion that she shows. The beauty of a woman grows with the passing years." (Audrey Hepburn)

Attraction vs. Attractiveness

Attraction: Is the action or power of evoking interest, pleasure, or liking for someone or something Attractiveness: Is the quality of being pleasing or appealing to the senses

Inner Beauty

Combination of qualities that pleases the intellect or moral sense. Intelligence, strength- character/qualities in a person. Love, power, and hope- come from within.

Outer Beauty

Combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight. Complexion, physical beauty- features, figure. Outward beauty is many times defined when people try to piece together the many fragments that others determine to be beautiful. Outer beauty doesn't define true beauty alone. it mostly produces unhappiness or emptiness if it's the only definition of beauty.

Comparisons/differences- Can have negative or positive emotional and psychological consequences. We cannot agree on what traits define beauty because each of us perceives it differently.

Different objects are observed in different ways by different people

Perception has 2 meanings: -The act or faculty of perceiving, or apprehending by means of the senses or of the mind; cognition; understanding. -Immediate or intuitive recognition or appreciation, as of moral, psychological, or aesthetic qualities; insight; intuition; discernment.

Perception and Perspective

Perception is the key to beauty: The perception of beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Perspective: Is a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view.

Inner Beauty vs. Outer Beauty

The things that define Inner beauty and outer beauty are related to the way we perceive people. Beauty can be perceived by our eyes, ears, intellect and moral values.

Feelings and Emotions

-Feelings- An emotional state or reaction(one appreciates what one sees of feels). -Emotions- (inner expression) Instinctive or intuitive feeling as distinguished from reasoning or knowledge. -Psychological- Beauty causes us to behave in a certain manner. Of, affecting, or arising in the mind; related to the mental and emotional state of a person.

Beauty's Role in Society Today

Beauty is defined in society by how men and women should look, their image. Society's definition of beauty is based on their outward physical beauty and how they are viewed in society.

What Defines Beauty?

Beauty is bought by the judgement of the eye(Can judge the appeal of a face): Beauty is in the Mind of the Beholder!!!

Factors: -Sleep, make-up, exercise/health -Social status, wealth, race, etc. Physical Appearance: -How you carry yourself- confidence, self esteem. -Person's features-facial, representation, appearance.

Art and Creation

How is Beauty Used: -It is intended to appeal to and connect with human emotion. -The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

The Senses

It's our senses that determine what we think is beautiful The brain acts mechanically on the mind by intervention of the senses

Objectivity

Not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts. Here are some ex's:

Spiritual Beauty

Relating to or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things. The soul, mind, and body Spiritual beauty reflects our religious faith.
