What is the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells ?
Nucleolus
Assembly of ribosomes begin here
Nucleus
Control center of the cell. Contains DNA
Cell membrane
Forms a strong barrier between the cell and its surroundings. Regulates what enters and leaves the cell.
Nuclear membrane
Keeps nuclear contents separate and allows passage of materials into and out of the nucleus
Flagella
Longer- whiplike projections used for movement
Golgi Body (apparatus)
Modifies, sorts, and packages proteins from the E.R for storage or transport out of the cell
Eukaryotic cells
More complex. Contain a nucleus and other membrane bound organelles.
ER
Rough ER- assembly/transport of proteins Smooth ER-assembly/transport of lipids
Cilia
Short- hairlike projections used for movement
Cell wall
Supports and protects the cell as well as giving it shape
Prokaryotic cells
Very simple cells that do not contain a nucleus or other membeane bound organelles.
Mitochondria
Where cellular respiration takes place. Uses chemical energy stored in food to produce a compound called ATP.
Chloroplast
Where photosynthesis takes place & light energy from the sun in converted into chemical energy
Ribosomes
Where proteins are assembled. Use instructions coded in DNA to synthesize proteins
