Simile

Definition: A comparison between two unlike things, using a word such as like, as, than, or resembles. Example: He looks like Zac Efron. (Only he doesn't)

Personification

Definition: A figure of speech in which an object or animal is spoken of as if it had human feelings, thoughts, or attitudes. Example: The moon was dancing with the stars.

Stanza

Definition: A group of consecutive lines in a poem that form a single unit. Example: Couplets

Epic

Definition: A long narrative poem that is written in heightened laguange and tells stories of the deeds of a heroic character who embodies the values of society. Example: Iliad.

Ode

Definition: A lyric poem, rhymed or unrhymed, on a serious subject. Example: "Ode to Thanks"

Extended Metaphor

Definition: A metaphor that is extended, or developed, over several lines of writing or even throughout an entire work. Example: In "O Captain! My Captain!" the United states is compared to a ship and President Abraham Lincoln is compared to a captain of a ship.

Symbol

Definition: A person, a place, a thing, or an event that has meaning in itself and stands for something beyond itself as well. Example: The American flag symbolizes the 50 states and the original 13 colonies.

Elegy

Definition: A poem of mourning, usually about someone who has died. Example: "O Captain! MY Captain!"

Lyric Poem

Definition: A poem that expresses the feelings or thoughts of a speaker rather than telling a story Example: "a Word is Dead"

Narrative Poem

Definition: A poem that tells a story. Example: "The Telltale Heart"

Refrain

Definition: A repeated siound, word, phrase, line, or group of llines. Example: "fallen cold and dead"

Ballad

Definition: A song or songlike poem that tells a story Example: "The Dying Cowboy"

Figure of Speech (A.K.A. Figurative Language)

Definition: A word or phrase that describes one thing in terms of another and is not meant to be understood as literally true. Example: "running a tight ship"

Metaphor

Definition: An imaginative comparison between two unlike things in which one thing is said to be another thing Example: Until this gets better, America is its' economy, inadequate.

Theme

Definition: GENERAL IDEA OR INSIGHT ABOUT LIFE THAT A WORK OF LITERATURE REVEALS Example: good will triumph.

Imagery

Definition: Language that appeals to the senses. Example: The snow is white and cold.

Denotation

Definition: Meaning, association, or emotion suggested by a word. Example: war- terrible, slaughter, chaos.

Hyperbole/Exaggeration

Definition: Overstating something, usually for the purpose of creating a comic effect Example: The teacher made us write a MILLION things!!!

Rhyme Scheme

Definition: Pattern of end rhymes. Example: -all is a, -end is b, thus abab.

Tone

Definition: The attitude a write takes toward his or her subject, characters, and audience. Example: He had black teeth and a ugly face.

Mood

Definition: The overall feeling of a work of literature. Example: It was a dark, scary night.

Alliteration

Definition: The repetition of consonant sounds in words that are close together Example: pass the pepper please.

Rhyme

Definition: The repitition of accented voewl sounds and all sounds following them in words that are close together in a poem. Example: -all. card no. 17

Onomatopoeia

Definition: The use of words whose sounds imitate or suggest their meaning. Example: Boom, clap, bang, bonk

Speaker

Definition: The voice talking to us in a poem. Example: The mad man in tell-tale heart.

Rhythym

Definition:A musical quality produced by the repitition of stressed and unstressed syllabless or by the repetition of certain other sound pasterns. Example: BUM- de BUM- de BUM

Allusion

Definition:A reference to a statement, a person, a place, or an event from literature, the arts, history, religion, mythology, politics, sports, or science. Example: Once upon a time,....

Diction

Definition:A writers' or speaker's choice of words. Example: Vernacular or jargon, friends or squad, etc.

Prose

Definition:Any writing that is not poetry. Example: Novels, novellas, etc.

Free Verse

Definition:Poetry without a regular meter or rhyme scheme. Example: "Love in the Middle of the Air"

Couplet

Definition:Two Consecutive lines of poetry that rhyme. Example: So very tall, thus he did ball.
