What was supreme courts opinion in the case Gideon v. Wainright 1963

Ruled in favor of Gideon, that the right to council was essential to a fair trial, thus those who could not afford a lawyer had to be appointed one by the national or state government.

what is compromise and why is it important in democracy

a settlement of a dispute reached by each side agreeing to consequences. important because all the people are represented and its not chosen on one side which could lead to retaliation.

ways a citizen can participate in government

being informed on information on how to become involved, by voting, running for office, jury duty, and volunteering for the military. speak their mind and debate on political issues, hold leaders accountable and attend community meetings. pay taxes and join political parties

self-government

belief that ordinary people can aspire to rule themselves as political equals

ideal

conception of something in its most perfect form. liberty equality and self government are ideals of american government.

under what circumstances would government involvement in the economy be justified

during national crises, terrorist attacks government needs to take control

Economic freedoms

earn money, purchase property, spend income on goods and services, choose an occupation and change jobs, determine where to save money and how much, open new businesses

why was protecting economic freedom important to the founders?

freedom was the key to pursuing other freedoms and allowed people to build wealth that would empower them to limit power of the government

liberal democracy

individual rights and liberties of all people including the minority are protected

did the american ideal and "we the people" originally apply to all people?

no it first applied only to a small group of people or else slaves, women, free african american and white men without property would have had a voice. but the constitution is forever evolving and has changed since then

minority rights

political rights held by groups who make up less than half of the population

How did ruby Bridges feel her right to equal protection under the law was being violated?

she felt like she didn't have equal protection because her school was segregated and she being a six year old had to walk a great distance to her all black school in a racist community. State governments were not informing the federal law of integration in public schools.

What would happen to american democracy if citizens stopped participating in our government

the government would not succeed, citizens play a huge part in our government which was created by the people for the people
