Ego State

A consistent set of patterns. A human may choose to feel, think, or behave in any one/all of the following states: Child, Adult, or Parent

Transaction

refers to an exchange of verbal or nonverbal communication between people. It is defined as a unit of social intercourse.

Activities

(METHOD OF TIME STRUCTURING) At this stage, people work together on a certain task. They are interpersonal exchanges in the context of work, planning, discussions, tasks, conduct of business meetings and the like.

Games

(METHOD OF TIME STRUCTURING) Berne defines this as "an ongoing series of complementary transactions which lead to a well-defined predictable outcome". In this stage, there is only one single winner or only losers (both feel bad). Examples are "Mine is better" "Yes, but.." always. It is comparing yourself to others and making yourself the better one. Participants usually blame the other and justify themselves. It results in the parties moving away with their favored feelings of pain, hurt, insult, put-downs, guilt, feeling ashamed, taken for a ride, treated unfairly, not understood.

Intimacy

(METHOD OF TIME STRUCTURING) Highest level of intensity one can achieve without playing games or the stage where there are no secrets from both parties. It requires honesty, openness, and trust which makes this stage risky but the most rewarding of all the ways of structuring time. This is due to free child and nurturing parent.

Withdrawal

(METHOD OF TIME STRUCTURING) In this level, there is no or little interaction. It means isolating oneself from other people and being on their own. While some people do this on the inside and are physically present but emotionally absent.

Ritual

(METHOD OF TIME STRUCTURING) It is carried out when we exchange strokes or "unit of recognition" in a predictable way. It is a formal and set sequence of exchange, a well mannered pleasant exchange of greetings. An example would be saying "hi" and getting "hello" in exchange or asking "how are you?" and expecting "I am fine and you?". Two people are interacting in a very structured and preprogrammed way. Structurally, the program for rituals belongs in the parent ego states.

Pasttimes

(METHOD OF TIME STRUCTURING) This is the dinner party level of interaction in which conversations involve fairly natural topics. Here we make polite and easy conversation and there are culturally agreed topics that can be talked about because both parties will avoid any controversial or painful topics. This level of interaction fits with casual acquaintances and people you have only just met. It might be amusing for a while, but most people will get quite bored with it rather sooner than later. Examples include politics, sports, music fashion. This is the perfect way to get to know others and it helps us decide who we want to get closer to and who we want to avoid.

Bulls-Eye Transaction

(Type of Transaction) Occurs when a stimulus from one person appeals to all the ego states (Parent, Adult and Child) of the other person simultaneously

Crossed Transaction

(Type of Transaction) Occurs when the sender of the message does NOT get the expected response from the receiver

Complementary Transaction

(Type of Transaction) When the person sending the message gets the predicted response from the other person.

Locked

(Type of Ulterior Transaction) Aim is to recognize options available to us i.e. we can response to a given transaction from any one of our ego states

Duplex

(Type of Ulterior Transaction) Are those in which there is more than one level of communication There will be hidden messages as well as open messages

Ulterior/Covert Level

(Type of Ulterior Transaction) Generally form the basis of games people play. These transactions are interesting because they are simply deceptive. In the psychological games that people play in daily life, these transactions carry a hidden meaning, which is the actual purpose of the transaction

Angular

(Type of Ulterior Transaction) The overt message goes from Adult to Adult , accompanied by a secret message aimed at the child. It is described as one in which one person gives an open message accompanied by a hidden message, and the second person gives an open message which is a response to the hidden message.

Ostensible/Overt Level

(Type of Ulterior Transaction) These behaviors which are directly observable, such as talking, running, scratching or blinking

Transactional Analysis

Developed by psychiatrist Eric Berne, is a form of modern psychology that examines a person's relationship and interactions is a psychoanalytic theory and method of therapy wherein social interactions (or "transactions") are analyzed to determine the ego state of the communicator (whether parent-like, childlike, or adult-like) as a basis for understanding behavior.

Ulterior Transaction

This is the most complex transaction because the communication has the double meaning. Such as, on the surface level the communication may have a clear adult message, but it may carry some hidden message on the psychological level and gets misinterpreted.

Nuclear Family

Type of family that consists of a husband and wife, and perhaps one or more children
