6.2 Biomes
Canopy
A dense covering of tall trees in the rain forest that reaches heights of 50 to 80 meters above the ground
Boreal forest
Canada, Alaska, Russia, forest in cooler, drier regions
Temperate forest
Europe, E Asia, E US, broad leafed deciduous tress...rain spread evenly throughout the year.
Why are polar ice caps not considered a biome?
They do not have a typical assortment of plants and animals, and much of the life does not live on land, but in the water.
Savanna
africa, south america, australia, india, less rain than tropical dry forest, but more rain than deserts
carniore
an animal that kills and eats other animals.
Tropical rain forest
asia, africa, south america, year round warm temps and at least 2 meters of rain per year.
hibernation
deep, sleeplike state that an animal enters for most of the winter
desert
driest biome on earth. under 25 centimeters of rain...hot during the day col at night.... Sahara, Namib deserts of africa, arizona, mexico,
Temperate rain forest
heavy rainfall, moderate temperatures, Pacific northwest
chaparral
mild wet winters and warm dry summers, Mediterranean Sea area in Europe and Africa
tundra
nearly as dry as a desert, in high latitudes and along the northern edges of Alaska, Canada
permafrost
permanently frozen soil
epiphyte
plants that grow on other plants instead of in soil
temperate grassland
prairies, central and midwestern US, seasonal precipitation, not enough rain to support large trees
understory
shorter trees and plants that are part f the rainfrest canpy
Three adaptations among animals in the polar caps.
thick fur or blubber, fish have antifreeze proteins that prevent their blood from freezing/.
emergent layer
top layer of the rainforest canopy, made up o the tallest trees.
deciduous
trees lose their leaves and stop photosynthesis during part of the year.
coniferous
trees that produce seed bearing cones
estivation
when conditions are dry, some animals enter a deep, sleeplike period of dormancy
Tropical dry forest.
year round warm temps, rainfall is seasonal, wet and dry seasons each span about half a year. n america, central america, south america, and se asia
