(1957-) Founder of al Qaeda, the terrorist network responsible for the attacks of September 11, 2001, and other attacks.

Taliban

A group of fundamentalist Muslims who took control of Afghanistan's government in 1996

Bush Doctrine

A policy adopted by the Bush administration in 2001 that asserts America's right to attack any nation that has weapons of mass destruction that might be used against U.S. interests at home or abroad.

Department of Homeland Security

Cabinet department created after the 9/11 terrorist attacks to coordinate domestic security efforts

American Airlines Flight 77

Crashed into the Pentagon Domestic transcontinental passenger flight from Virgina to LA. The plane was hijacked by five men with Al-Qaeda. They crashed the plane into the pentagon killing 64 on board and 125 people in the building and themselves.

Mohamed Atta

He traveled to Afghanistan where he trained with al Qaeda. In '01, atta went to the US where he trained as a flight pilot in Florida. During the 9/11 Terrorist attacks, atta is believed to have piloted American Airlines flight 11, which charades into the WTC

War on Terror

Initiated by President George W. Bush after the attacks of September 11, 2001, the broadly defined war on terror aimed to weed out terrorist operatives and their supporters throughout the world.

9/11 Commission

National Commission on Terrorist Attacks upon the United States; this bipartisan, independent group was authorized by Congress and President Bush in 2002 to study the circumstances surrounding the September 11 terrorist attacks, including preparedness and the immediate response. Its 2004 report includes recommendations designed to guard against future attacks.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed

Pakistani Islamist militant held by the United States at the Guantanamo bay detention camp b/c he was the master mind behind 9/11 that killed more then 3000 innocent people

President George W. Bush; theunited states and its allies invade the country of Afghanistan in order to remkve the talaban from power after the 9/11 attacks.

Shanksville, Pennsylvania

Site where Flight 93 crashed; the fourth hijacked plane on 9/11 Goal was to fly into the white household, but the passengers stoped them

Rudy Giuliani

The mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2002, and led the city after 9/11 attacks

United airlines flight 175

Was a domestic flight from Boston to LA. The crash of the plane into the south tower was the only impact seen live on TV around the world as it occurred.

Was a domestic passenger flight that was hijacked by five Al-Qaeda members on 9/11 as apart of the attack and crashed into the north tower of the world Trade centern

World Trade Center bombing (1993)

Was a terroist attack on the World Trade Center, carried out on 2/26/93, when a truck bomb detonated below the North Tower of the World Trade Center in NYC

Zacarias Moussaoui

a French citizen who pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring to kill citizens of the United States as part of the September 11 attacks. As a result of his conviction, he is serving a life sentence without parole at the Federal ADX Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado, USA.

Al Qaeda

a network of Islamic terrorist organizations, led by Osama bin Laden, that carried out the attacks on the US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya in 1998, the USS Cole in Yemen in 2000, and the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001

Twin Towers

twin skyscrapers 110 stories high in New York City; built 1368 feet tall in 1970 to 1973; destroyed by a terrorist attack on September 11, 2001
