Britain claimed more territory over time from the (weakened) Mughal empire. Eventually, they conquered all of India using their own troops and Indian soldiers.

They used economic imperialism and western powers to help with their period of instability (due to natural disasters and internal rebellion). This created spheres of influence which meant the Qing dynasty remained in power but the Western powers had trading rights in their own sphere.
