What were some causes of tension between the US and GB in the 1830's-40's and how was each resolved?
-British authors bad mouthing Am w lynching (someone is killed by hanging) and slave auctioneering -Caroline Incident Am. boat is attacked and set on fire by British - Creole Incident slaves rebelled GB offered asylum to the slaves. Am. scared that Bahamas/ Caribbean could become safe haven.. -the south was specifically angry.
What were president Polk's four goals? Assess his degree of success.
-COIL -California, he gained California -Oregon, he settles Oregon dispute with Britain -Independent treasury he restores IT which is the Democratic version of the BUS -Lowered tariffs, he lowered tariffs because democrats wanted to see tariff rates go down -He did more than most presidents in a single term ever
Identify and explain the role of manifest Destiney in American history
-James K. Polk won election said he would protect Tx. -Idea that God had manifestly destined Am. to expand coast to coast.
Why did some AM oppose Am involvement in a War w/ Mexico
-Many northern congressmen were against it bcuz slavery and Imperialistic expansion ( gov that only tries to increase size) -Lincoln was against and questioned Polk -Congress (the cabinet) said we should wait till Mexico attacked first
Explain the background, the issues, and the resolution in the Texas question
-Mexico in revolt refused to recognize Texas's independence Mexico threatened war if Am. protected Tx. -GB wanted relations with Texas to tear Am. apart, they wanted TX as an ally. There is an issue in campaign of 1844 Democrats were pro-expansion and for annexing Texas. -President Tyler signed resolution to invite Texas to be 28th state.
Why did some people oppose the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
-it gave Am TX and south realized they would no do well not to want all of MX because it was anti-slavery -it was opposed by who wanted it all or who wanted none of it
