A political response to slavery would be the fugitive slave law. After losing California to the abolitionists, the South created this law. It required to return slaves who escaped from one state to another. A social response to slavery would be the book "Uncle Tom's Cabin" , and abolitionist movements. These movements brought attention to slavery and its injustices. As abolitionist movements continued throughout the nation, more attention was brought towards slavery which changed many views on the concept of slavery.

Briefly explain why ONE of the following best supports the view that the enforcement of a new Fugitive Slave Law in the 1850s resulted in strong and varied reactions in the North. - formation of the Republican Party - publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin - increased activity on the Underground Railroad Contrast your choice against ONE of the other options demonstrating why that option is not as good as your choice. Briefly explain ONE critical response to the changes during this period.

Increased activity on the Underground Railroad supports the view that the Fugitive Slave Law caused strong reactions in the North. Increased activity along this "railroad' meant greater participation by free blacks and abolitionists in helping escaped slaves reach freedom in the North. While the publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin helped highlight the injustice of slavery, it didn't create a direct effect such of that of increasing the aid to escaped slaves. This time period saw many changes such as the introduction of Kansas-Nebraska Act, which essentially allowed slavery to continue to expand into territories. A critical response to these changes was the formation of the Republican party which emerged with the purpose of preventing slavery and its further expansion.

Explain how the point of view you identified in Part A helped to shape one specific action between 1820 and 1860.

The cartoon depicts Van Buren and his son lighting a barn on fire. Buren, a Free-Soiler, was one who actively attempted to prevent the extension of slavery into new territories. This cartoon represents Buren's zeal for social reform through his Free-Soiler beliefs and has a view that Buren sought to force the issue of slavery into the campaign. The cartoon depicts nominee Lewis Cass fleeing from the burning barn. This represents Buren's Free-Soiler beliefs and his opposition to Democrat Lewis Cass. This anti-slavery sentiment identified in the cartoon led to the action of the introduction of the Wilmot Proviso, an act to prohibit slavery in the territories acquired in the Mexican War.
