Art Appreciation Chapter 5 Part 1 Vocab
Tint
A color altered by adding a different color in order to make it look lighter. Example: adding white to red to make pink
Hue
A color found on the color wheel
Shade
A colored altered by adding a different color to make it look darker. Example: adding black to red to make maroon
Intensity
A function of a color's relative brightness or dullness.
Medium
A liquid added to paint that makes it easier to manipulate
Pointillism
A style of painting that consists of small points of colors in belief that they'll mix together in the viewer's eyes. Example: a dot of blue next to a dot of yellow might be viewed as green
Atmospheric Perspective
A technique used in landscape painting to create a three dimensional look onto a two dimensional surface. It includes making objects smaller and less distinct to make it look farther away
Aerial Perspective
A technique used in landscape painting to make objects look more distant by making it more blue or cool in color.
Palette
A thin board with a thumb hole at one end that is used to mix and extend the amount of colors that an artist has
Colorwheel
An arrangement of hues in a circle based on different color theories
Secondary Colors
Colors created by two primary colors. Example: orange, green, and violet
Tenebrism
Meaning murky. It doesn't connect to chiaroscuro in art
Analogous Colors
Pairs of colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel. Example: yellow and orange
Complementary Colors
Pairs of colors that are opposite to each other on the color wheel. Example: red and green
Spectrum
The colors of visible light when sunlight passes through a prism
Primary Colors
The colors that that can't be created from different colors. Examples: yellow, blue, and red
Core of Shadow
The darkest area of an object in chiaroscuro
Saturation
The intensity of a color in an artwork
Intermediate Colors
The range of colors between a primary color and the neighboring secondary color. Example: yellow-green
Cast Shadow
The shadow castes an object which is darker than the shadowed surface in chiaroscuro
Highlights
The spot or spots of highest color value in a picture
Additive Process
The theory that when all the different hues of colored light are mixed, it'll be white. And every time you add a color, it'll get closer to the sense of white
Subtractive Process
The theory that when all the different hues of different colored pigment are mixed, it'll create black. And every time you add a color, it'll get closer to the sense of black
Shadow
The unlighted surface of an object in artwork
Hatching
The use of closely spaced lines that create the effect of shadowing. The closer the lines, the darker the area looks
Temperature
The warmth or coolness of a hue. Example: warm colors are yellow, orange, and red while cool colors are green, blue, and violet
Cross Hatching
Two or more sets of closely spaced lines that overlap and are angled to one another. Used to create a sense of three dimensional space
Modeling
Used in drawing, painting, and printmaking to create a three dimensional look by adding light and shade by using hatching
Simultaneous Contrast
When complementary colors are placed side by side which give them the sense that they are brighter and more intense than when they're isolated
