How dead zone forms

A "dead zone" forms through eutrophication. Excess nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) are found in the water. This can be from excess fertilizers being used anywhere (not just in or near the water) which goes to the water through the ground. Algae blooms which blocks the sunlight so plants die because they cannot photosynthesize. When the algae dies it goes to the bottom where it is consumed and decomposed by bacteria. This uses up the oxygen. No oxygen means the fish cannot survive and therefore a dead zone occurs.
