Blood
Hemocytoblast
A type of stem cell from which all formed elements originate
Formed Elements
Cell fragments; include erythrocytes, thrombocytes, and leukocytes
Red Bone Marrow
Formed elements of blood are produced here. Site of formation and maturation of erythrocytes, thrombocytes, monocytes and granulocytes (neutrophils, basophils and eosinophils). Consists of network of reticular fibers, blood vessels and many cell types.
Lymphoid Stem Cells
Hemocytoblasts differentiate into ___ from which lymphocytes develop
Megakaryocytes
Hemocytoblasts differentiate into these giant cells that fragment in red marrow to produce thrombocytes (platelets). have a large, multi-lobed nucleus
Adipocytes
Large, nearly circular open areas.
Hemopoiesis
The process of producing formed elements of the blood
Monocyte
Type of agranulocyte, has lots of blue cytoplasm, 4-8%
Lymphocyte
Type of agranulocyte, has small amount of blue cytoplasm and forms light blue halo around nucleus, 20-45%
Basophil
Type of granulocyte, bi-lobed, has pink cytoplasm and large purple granules, 0-1%
Eosinophil
Type of granulocyte, bi-lobed, has pink cytoplasm and large reddish-orange granules, 1-4%
Neutrophil
Type of granulocyte, multi-lobed, has pink cytoplasm and the granules don't pick up stain, 40-70%
Stem Cell
a cell capable of producing daughter cells that can differentiate into other cell types
Differential White Blood Cell count
a determination of the percent of the different WBC types in a person's blood
Thrombocytes
aka platelets, not true cells but fragments derived from megakaryocytes located in red bone marrow. darkly stained, irregular-shaped objects. Play an essential role in hemostasis, or the stoppage of bleeding from a damaged blood vessel
Erythrocytes
aka red blood cells, have a binconcave disk shape thus appear paler in the center. The most numerous of the formed elements. Function to transport oxygen and carbon dioxide. Contain high content of hemoglobin and have an enzyme called carbonic anhydrase.
Leukocytes
aka white blood cells, nucleated unlike RBC's. Have five different types that help to protect the body against invasion by a wide variety of pathogens.
Plasma
an incredibly complex substance; the nonliving fluid matrix component of blood
Blood
consists of plasma and formed elements
Granulocyte
contains visible, stained granules in its cytoplasm
Agranulocyte
do not contain visible stained granules in its cyctoplasm
Myeloid Stem Cells
hemocytoblasts differentiate into ____ erythrocytes, granulocytes and monocytes develop
Sinusoid
major blood vessel in red bone marrow. formed elements enter into the bloodstream through its walls
4 - 6 million per cubic millimeter
normal RBC count for people living at sea level
4,000 - 11,000 per cubic millimeter
normal WBC count
250,000 - 500,000 per cubic millimeter
platelet count
Hematocrit
the percentage of whole blood that consists of formed elements
