Gigabit Ethernet

CAT5e twisted pair cable that has a maximum speed of 1Gbps, supports a signaling rate of 100MHz, and has a max distance of 100m.

RJ-11

Twisted pair cable connector used with CAT1 cables in telephone system connections that is not suitable for network connectivity. Have either 4 or 6 pins.

Mechanical Transfer Registered Jack

(MT-RJ) Also called a fiber jack connector is a compact snap to lock connector used with multimode fiber. Compact and easy to use.

Shielded Twisted Pair

(STP) Type of twisted pair cable that includes foil wrapper shielding around its conductors to improve the cable's resistance to interference and noise. Usually contain 4 pairs of stranded or solid conductors. More expensive.

Unshielded Twisted Pair

(UTP) Type of twisted pair cable that does not include shielding around its conductors. These usually contain 4 pairs of stranded or solid conductors. Inexpensive and reliable.

Fiber Optic Cable

A network cable that has a core surrounded by one or more glass or plastic strands. The core is the thin glass center through which light travels transmitting data. Least sensitive to electromagnetic interference.

Twisted Pair Cables

A type of cable in which one or more copper wires are twisted around each, color coded, and housed in a protective insulating plastic sheath to form a pair. All pairs are encased in a plastic sheath or jacket.

Subscriber Connector

Also known as a standard connector. Box shaped fiber optic connector that snaps into a receptacle.

RJ-45

An 8 pin connector used by twisted pair cables in networking.

Ethernet

CAT3 twisted pair cable that has a maximum speed of 10Mbps, is used for telephone wiring, and has a max distance of 100m.

Fast Ethernet

CAT5 twisted pair cable that has a maximum speed of 100Mbps, a signaling rate of 100Mhz and a maximum distance of 100m.

Biconic

Connector that is a screw-on type connector with a tapered sleeve that is fixed against guided rings and screws onto the threaded sleeve to secure the connection.

Fiber Distributed Data Interface

FDDI connectors are used for multimode fiber optic cable and are a push/pull, two-channel snap-fit connector.

Ferrule Connector

Fiber optic connector that uses a heavy duty tubular structure made of ceramic or metal that supports the fiber in the center for more mechanical stability than SMA or ST connectors. Used frequently in industrial settings where more durability is required.

Sub-multi Assembly

SMA connectors are similar to ST connectors and use a threaded ferrule on the outside to lock the connector in place. Typically used where water or other environmental factors necessitate a waterproof connection.

Type F

Type of coax connector used with a 75-ohm cable to connect cable TV and FM antenna cables.

Type BNC

Type of coax connector with a center pin connected to the center cable conductor and a metal tube connected to the shield of the cable.

Coaxial Cable

Type of copper cable that features a central conduction copper core surrounded by an insulator and braided or foil shielding.

Straight Tip

Type of fiber optic cable similar in appearance to BNC connectors and are used to connect multimode fibers.

Local Connector

Used for both singlemode and multimode fiber optic. About half the size of an SC or ST connector. Can be used to transition installations from twisted pair copper cabling to fiber. Looks like a subscriber connector but with RJ-45 type latching.
