Ch. 2
Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)
A US national code that covers workplace safety for workers and equipment.
safety data sheet (SDS)
A document in a uniform format that includes section numbers, headings, and associated information to communicate the hazards of hazardous chemical products, as required by OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (HCS).
air-purifying respirator
A passive respirator that removes dust and certain chemicals from the air.
hazard
A potential for harm. According to OSHA, hazard is "associated with a condition or activity that, if left uncontrolled, can result in an injury or illness."
Stationary refrigerant detector
A refrigerant detector in a fixed location that will note an increase of refrigerant vapors or gases in advance of dangerous levels. These may be installed in a mechanical room or use multiple sensors throughout a facility that communicate with a central unit
supplied-air respirator
A respirator that provides supplemental oxygen.
signal word
A specific word used to emphasize hazards and indicate the relative level of severity of the hazard assigned to a GHS hazard class and category.
hazard statement
A standard phrase assigned to a hazard class and category that describes the nature of the hazard.
hazard pictogram
A symbol used to convey health, physical, and environmental hazard information.
Globally Harmonized System (GHS)
A system for standardizing and harmonizing the classification and labeling of all chemicals.
ASHRAE Standard 34
An ASHRAE standard that names refrigerants and assigns safety classifications according to their flammability and toxicity.
Hazard Communication Standard (HCS)
An OSHA standard that requires chemical manufacturers, distributors, or importers to provide safety data sheets (SDS) to communicate the hazards of hazardous chemical products.
confined space
An area that is closed off from a larger space and is large enough for a person to enter and perform work therein.
Based on ASHRAE Standard 34, which refrigerant classification would indicate least toxicity ?
Class A1
personal protective equipment (PPE)
Safety equipment worn by a technician to minimize exposure to health and physical hazards. Examples include gloves, hard hats, goggles, and respirators.
lockout/tagout (LOTO)
The combination of locking out and tagging out, in which a mechanism or an electrical switch is locked open and a tag is placed on it to inform others that service work is in process and that this mechanism or switch's position should not be changed.
lockout (LO)
The practice of locking a mechanism or an electrical switch in the open position so that maintenance or service work can be performed safely.
electrical shock occurs when
a body becomes part of an electrical circuit
When positioning an extension ladderthe base can be no farther from the wall than the supported height.

Always use a pressure regulator when working with
all of the above
before operating a power tool
all of the above
A hard hat can be worn with the bill facing forward or backward
false
In an emergency situation, any type of fire extinguisher can be used on any type of fire
false
Keys used for electrical lockout must be kept near the lockout device so any worker can unlock the device in an emergency .
false
Tagout is the practice of securing an electrical switch in an open position so a circuit cannot be energized while work is being performed.
false
a ladder can be placed on a scaffold as long as the scaffold wheels are locked
false
a stationary refrigerant detector indicates when refrigerant detector indicates when refrigerant is moving too slowly in a system
false
facial hair can make a dust mask or respirator ineffective due to poor sealing

in an emergency situation, any type of fire extinguisher can be used on any type of fire
false
you can safely use water to extinguish an electrical fire

Store and transport refrigerant cylinders
in a vertical position with the valve up
the primary hazard in a confined space is
limited airflow
when using a torch near combustible materials., always
place a heat shield between the torch flame and the materials
When referring to the correct usage of fire extinguisher, the lettters P.A.S.S. stand for
pull, aim, squeeze, sweep
Heat related illnesses produce the following signs except
shivering
Asbestos insulation, which may be found in old installations, contains fibers that can cause cancer if inhaled
