Morrill Act of 1862

Perkins Act

It was first authorized in1984 to support secondary and postsecondary vocational education programs in agriculture, business, and technology.

American Home Economics Association

Richards was the first president~~the entourage formed this at the Tenth Lake Placid Conference in 1908

Ellen Swallow Richards

The founder of family and consumer sciences and the American Home Economics Association~~Women's Hall of Fame credits her as the founder of ecology as a discipline of study~~lived from 1842-1911~~she was called a "special student"~~she married Professor Robert H. Richards~~she was a fascinating "working woman"~~she petitioned the Women's Education Association of Boston to pay for expenses to create a research lab for women on the MIT campus~~example of the highly educated professional woman

Consumerism

The idea that increased consumption of goods is good for individuals and the economy, was at an all-time high.

Smith-Hughes Act of 1917

This was the first act setting vocational education apart from the regular high school curriculum and establishing federal funds to support vocational education, now called career and technical education (CTE).

Land-Grant Universities

This was to extend educational opportunities that promoted agricultural, industrial, and domestic economy, which was later known as home economics.

Smith-Lever Act of 1914

Under President Woodrow Wilson, Congress approved this act which established the Cooperative Extension Service.

Catherine Beecher
