What are two methods suggested for catching mechanical errors?

1. When proofreading for mechanical errors, slow your reading rate to "low gear." 2. read from right to left. This focuses your attention on each word, letting you check for mechanical errors.

The best proofreaders are effective because they

1.Pay attention to detail. 2. Take time to proofread carefully 3. Recognize frequent types of errors. 4. Use a variety of proofreading methods. 5. are good spellers. 6. know and apply the basics of correct grammar and punctuation. 7. Use appropriate reference materials to guarantee accuracy.

Team Method

As the name implies, the team method involves two people. One person reads the draft or original copy aloud while another person follows along, reading and marking the other copy. When using this method on lists of names, the readers must verify accu-racy of spelling. The team method ensures that copy has been proofread carefully because two people have checked it.

Does the content make sense?• Are the facts accurate and complete?• Do I understand what the writer is trying to tell me?• Do the subject and verb agree?• Is there number agreement (singular versus plural)?

What is the point of proofreading?

Ensures the accuracy of a document

People hired primarily to proofread are known as ________

Proofreaders

Comparative Proofreading Method steps:

STEP 1 Place the document to be proofread next to the original copy. STEP 2 Place the documents being compared as close to each other as possible. This decreases unnecessary eye and/or neck movement and allows for more accurate proofreading.

On-Screen Method steps

STEP 1 Proofread on-screen once for mechanical errors and once for content errors. (Proofread sections of the document or one full screen at a time.) STEP 2 When proofreading for mechanical errors, move your cursor and carefully pronounce each word as you read. STEP 3 Check for words that may have been omitted or added when copy was revised. STEP 4 Although most word processing software hyphenates words according to its built-in dictionary, check all of the line endings for inac-curacies. Words are sometimes hyphenated in odd places. Check to make sure that large gaps do not occur at the ends of lines because words have not been divided. Also check words that were hyphenated originally at the ends of lines but are now in the middle of lines because of lengthy revisions that caused different word-wrapped paragraphs. STEP 5 Use the spelling checker to check the spelling in the entire document. (This procedure is discussed further in Chapter 2.) STEP 6 Print the document after you have proofread it.

Comparative Proofreading Method

The comparative proofreading method involves comparing one document with another. This method is especially useful when you proofread statistical or technical material that contains many numbers or specialized vocabulary, such as that found in medical, legal, and scientific material. This method can also be combined with the team method, which is explained later in the chapter.
