Was a slave who sued for his freedom after his owner took him to Wisconsin where the Missouri Compromise banned slavery. The case made it to the Supreme Court who ruled that Dred Scott could not sue for his freedom because he was not a citizen. The court also ruled that African Americans (free or slave) could never become citizens and that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional since slaves were property and the 5th Amendment protects our right to take our property wherever we want.
