Chapter 21 posture
What is the result of the constant displacement and correction of the COG within the BOS.
Postural sway
Which position would be best to asses the condition in someone with excessive cervical lordosis?
Side view
When using a plumb line go assess a persons posture in the lateral standing position, you should begin by lining up the plumb line with what body structure?
Slightly front of the lateral malleolus
For ideal posture where should the plumb line pass on the knee?
Slightly posterior to the patella
"Poor" posture can be caused by what?
Structural problems, trauma, neurological conditions, hemivertebra, compression fracture, paralysis/spasticity, sit/stand for extended periods
Define posture
The position of your body parts in relation to each other at any given time.
To assess an anterior pelvic tilt which position is best?
The side
For ideal posture where should the plumb line pass on the head?
Through the earlobe
For ideal posture where should the plumb line pass on the hip?
Through the greater trochanter
For ideal posture where should the plumb line pass on the shoulder?
Through the tip of the acromion process
How can a kneeling stool decrease disk pressure?
Tilting the pelvis anteriorly
What is the best posture in the sidelying position?
Bottom leg extended. Top leg flexed. Pillow between legs
What is the secondary curve?
Anteriorly convex curves of the cervical and lumbar spine develops through childhood
What can good body mechanics accomplish when applied to all activities?
Avoid stress to the trunk, maintain spinal curves, maintain good posture
If a person had an excessive cervical lordosis, would you expect the cervical extensors or flexors to be tight?
Cervical extensor
What is the primary curve?
Concave, anterior curve at birth
What is the best posture when lying prone?
Not recommended. Pillows may increase stresses on the neck.
What occurs when sitting with an unsupported back?
Deceases lumbar curve. Pressure on the invertebral disks and posterior structures increases.
During posterior pelvic tilt what happens at the lumbar spine?
Decrease lumbar lordosis or flat back
How does sitting with lumbar support help keep the upper body in good alignment?
Decreases pressure on the disks, maintains vertebral curves.
How much work is added to your cervical spine when the head goes into flexion?
Every inch adds 15 lbs of work
If having disk problems what position is the best? Why?
Extended posture, bc throughout most of the day you are in forward flexion.
What is good sitting posture?
Feet flat on floor. Good chair. Keyboard at elbow height with slight incline. Padded wrist wrest. Too of computer at eye level.
When in supine what type of resting surface is ideal?
Firm enough to support lumbar curve but soft enough to conform and support normal curves of body
Which position would be best to asses the position of the shoulders in relation to each other?
From the front or back
What muscles make up the anti-gravity muscles?
Hip extensors Knee extensors Trunk extensors Neck extensors
If a person had an anterior tilt of the pelvis, would you expect the hip flexors or hip extensors to be tight?
Hip flexors
During anterior pelvic tilt what happens to the lumbar spine?
Increase lumbar lordosis
What Position should the shoulders be in relation to each other?
Level and not elevated or depressed
What is the postural sway?
Motion of the upright body caused by motion occurring at the ankles.
