Many struggle to survive and may fail within the first couple of years. they tend to do long hours or unpaid of extremely low wages among family members of Asian business owners as a part of a reason why they survive.

Why do they start their own businesses?

They encounter the glass ceiling. Those with limited skills and informal networks open small businesses. Response to discrimination or professionals wanting to open up a business.

The 'Myth of the Model Minority'

What does it mean? Model minority in stereotypes. It perpetuates a narrative in which Asian American children are whiz kids or musical geniuses. Within the myth of the model minority, Tiger Moms force children to work harder and be better than everyone else, while nerdy, effeminate dads hold prestigious—but not leadership—positions in STEM industries like medicine and accounting. What are the impacts? This myth characterizes Asian Americans as a polite, law-abiding group who have achieved a higher level of success than the general population through some combination of innate talent and pull-yourselves-up-by-your-bootstraps immigrant striving.

What are microaggressions and why is being aware of them important?

"brief and commonplace daily verbal behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults." Many are indeed immigrants, nearly a quarter are native born, and can speak english and other languages very well. Questions like: "Where are you from?" " You speak good english?" "Where were you born?"

When did the different Asian American groups come to the US, Why, and what type of work did they do when they arrived?

* Filipinos arrived in 1763- crewmen who had been forced into service jumped shipped in Louisiana and escaped into the bayous. *Chinese arrived in 1850- seeking work and opportunity. "cheap, mobile, and temporary" labor force during worker shortages; agriculture, the fishing industry, domestic industry and laundry work, mining, and railways. * Japanese arrived May 1843- economic and political unrest in Japan, coupled with labor shortages and western expansion. They then migrated to Hawaii.

Asian Americans- what does the term mean and which ethnic group does it include?

A heterogeneous group of Americans having orgins in the Asia Pacific region. Ethnic group- far east, southeastern Asia, or the Indian subcontinent. Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippians islands, Thailand, and Vietnam.
