Chapter 7 Notes- Light Zones/Color in the Ocean
What is the aphotic zone?
zone where light doesn't reach, makes up large part of ocean
Why are the oceans blue?
Blue light remains when reflected + emerge from water
What are the 2 zones within the photic zone &; their characteristics?
Euphotic Zone: upper, shallow portion of photic zone, most biologically productive region, photosynthethic prganisms Dysphotic Zone: lower region of photic zone not enough light for photosynthesis
In water, light reflects off _____________ colored suspended particles, where dark particles ________________ light.
In water, light reflects off light colored suspended particles, where dark particles absorb light.
Why are jellyfish the most common organisms in the deep sea?
tolerate harsh conditions
What is the photic zone?
200 m deep-upper region in ocean where light penetrates
When is the color red absorbed?
4m (13ft)
What are chromatophores?
a cell that contains a pigment
What is countershading &; how is it used?
open ocean fish mostly, darker on top (blends in with deep ocean), white on the bottom (hides them from below)
What is the difference in wavelength lengths for red vs. blue what type of wavelength is removed by particles?
red=long wavelength blue short wavelength particles are removed by long wave lengths
What are characteristics of nocturnal organisms?
reddish/orangish colors are absorbed quickly so they blend in
