Coursera Quizlet -- 1 minute set... from copy-paste!
Teach-Out
A brief (2-4 hour) course offered on a MOOC platform, free and open to the public, typically covering current events, such as the opioid crisis, or free speech on campus.
Iteration
A broad term used to refer to the process of making changes and improvements to a currently running course.
Private Session
A closed session of a course that is otherwise offered openly. It is possible to run a private session and a public session of a course concurrently.
MOOC, or "Massively Open Online Course"
A course provided on the internet, free of charge, without any limit to the number of learners who can enroll.
IVQ, or "In-Video Quiz"
A feature specific to Coursera, these are ungraded (formative) quizzes that appear at specific points in time during a video. Note: edX can be "hacked" using custom JS to offer something similar.
Peer assessment
A form of qualitative assessment commonly used in online courses where learners evaluate one another's responses using a rubric provided by the instructor.
Cohort
A group of learners who progress through a course experience over roughly the same time span. Generally, a cohort is defined by whichever session of a course they're enrolled in.
Persona
A hypothetical learner who we either expect or hope to take one of our courses. Personas are used during the design phase to guide the course creation process.
Learner-centered/focused
A pedagogical philosophy informed by constructivism that encourages instructors to allow learners a high level of autonomy in shaping their own learning path. In learner-centered pedagogy, learners are expected to be active participants, rather than passive recipients of knowledge.
MVP, or "Minimally Viable Product"
A product that offers the minimum feature set necessary to satisfy its users' needs. Releasing a product as an MVP provides an opportunity to get feedback from users early in the product development cycle.
Specialization
A series of courses (usually 3-7) offered on the Coursera platform, leading to a Specialization certificate of completion.
XSeries
A series of courses (usually 3-7) offered on the edX platform, leading to an XSeries certificate of completion.
Masters Track Specialization
A series of graduate-level courses offered on the Coursera platform, leading to a certificate of completion. These certificates can count as course credit in the program offering the certificate, if you apply and get accepted to that program.
MicroMasters
A series of graduate-level courses offered on the edX platform, leading to a MicroMasters certificate of completion. MicroMasters certificates can count as course credit in the program offering the certificate, if you apply and get accepted to that program.
CDA, or "Course Development Assistant"
A temporary role managed by AI to provide assistance to an instructor during the course development process. The work of a CDA takes place primarily during the development portion of the MOOC creation process, leading up to the point of the MOOC launch.
CA, or "Course Advocate"
A temporary role managed by AI to provide assistance to an instructor while their course is running. The work of a CA begins slightly before the MOOC launches and continues on through the management and maintenance portions of the live MOOC delivery.
Module
A term used most often to describe the most high-level content blocks within a course. Coursera uses this term; edX uses the term "section" instead.
edX
An online learning platform offering MOOCs, professional certificate programs, and Micromasters programs. This is one of the two MOOC platforms with whom AI and the University of Michigan are partners.
Coursera
An online learning platform offering MOOCs, specializations, and online degrees. This is one of the two MOOC platforms with whom AI and the University of Michigan are partners.
On-demand/self-paced
In direct contrast to instructor-paced course models, on-demand or self-paced courses allow you to proceed through the course a quickly or as slowly as you choose, and are theoretically open and available indefinitely. Both edX and Coursera take a hybrid approach, with some session-based elements and some on-demand elements.
B-roll
In video production, this refers to supporting footage that is added to illustrate a video's narrative.
Lesson
On Coursera, this is the next level of organizing blocks of content. There can be any number of lessons within a module.
Segment
One video or lecture.
SPOC, or "Small Private Open Course"
Similar to a MOOC in design and often offered on the same platforms, but with limited enrollment, generally by invitation only.
Week
Sometimes this is used instead of "module"; on edX and Coursera, one module is generally expected to correspond to one week's worth of content. There are exceptions, including courses that employ a non-linear structure.
Instructor-paced/session-based
The "traditional" mode of timing content delivery in a MOOC. Content is made available to learners by a predetermined schedule, assignments have explicit due dates, and each course runs for a limited period of time. Both edX and Coursera take a hybrid approach, with some session-based elements and some on-demand elements.
Higher-touch
This generally refers to a higher level of interaction in a course. This could be either learner to learner, or instructor to learner interaction.
