he twist ending of the story occurs when Armand finds a letter that his mother wrote to his father saying, "night and day, I thank the good God for having so arranged our lives that our dear Armand will never know that his mother, who adores him, belongs to the race that is cursed with the brand of slavery" (Chopin 49). This letter reveals that Armand's mom was black, and that he was the reason Armand and Desiree's child was mixed. Desiree's Baby: Review paragraphs 42 to 45. What happens to Desiree and her baby, and why would Desiree make such a drastic decision? (Hint: Consider issues of race.)

Desiree and her baby disappear into the woods/ swamp and are never to return, instead of going to her mom's. This leads to the assumption of their death. She takes drastic measures because of the shame she would be dealing with, not only for her dismissal, but also for the discoloration of her baby. Since her husband left her, she no longer had a caretaker, so as a woman of color her life would have become meaningless in the eyes of the society.

Desiree's Baby: Review paragraphs 19, 20, and 21. What brings Desiree to the realization that her son is not completely White? Also, explain why this comparison is shocking to her. (Hint: Do you think Desiree views the enslaved boy as she does her own son?)

Desiree starts to realize something has happened when her husband starts to distance himself from her and their child. Desiree sees the way her son and an enslaved boy are physically similar. She looks at the color of their skin, and realizes her son is not entirely white. This is shocking to Desiree because she believes that both herself and her husband are white, and she cant understand how her son could be a person of color. She also cannot fathom her son being the same as their enslaved peoples.

Story of An Hour: Mrs. Mallard is described as descending the stairs "like a goddess of Victory." Why does she feel victorious?

Mrs. Mallard fees victorious because she won her life back, and can see the light at the end of the tunnel. She feels she now has a chance to be free.

Story of An Hour: The last line of the story is this: "When the doctors came, they said she had died of heart disease-of joy that kills." In what ways is this an ironic statement?

In the beginning of the story, it is told that Mrs. Mallard has a heart condition and her sister was worried about breaking the news of her husband's death to her. This is an ironic statement because she thought that her husband had died and she was excited at the thought of freedom. There is also irony because she then dies of the heart condition when she finds out her husband is alive. The doctors claim she was happy because her husband was alive, but in reality she was not happy.

Desiree's Baby: Review paragraphs 46, 47, and 48. What does the bonfire Armand builds symbolize? Explain your reasoning.

The bonfire symbolizes the burning of all the memories of his wife and child. Armand didn't want any sign of a connection between himself and Desiree.

Story of An Hour: 1. The setting of the story is limited-- it's confined to a room, a staircase, and a front door. How does this limitation help express the theme of the story? Please discuss the theme in your response!

The setting of the story relates to the limits Louise Mallard feels in her marriage and her life. The confined setting contributes to Mrs. Mallard's feelings.

Story of An Hour: What view of marriage does the story present? Does it only represent attitudes toward marriage in the nineteenth century, or could it equally apply to attitudes about marriage today? How does it critique Victorian social norms?

The story presents marriage as a cage or trap. Although this attitude could apply to a modern day marriage in some situations, it mainly relates towards the nineteenth century because husbands treated their wives so inferiorly. "The Story of an Hour" majorly critiques Victorian social norms by pointing out the unfair treatment of women in the household and society in general.

Desiree's Baby: Throughout the short story, Chopin plays with color imagery, both ironically and as a form of foreshadowing. Describe two different moments where color imagery is used and their effects.

Three different moments where color imagery is found in this story are: "The yellow nurse woman sat beside the window fanning herself" (Choppin 7) because the term refers to someone who is biracial with black and white parents just as the baby. "It had only been a disquieting suggestion; an air of mystery for the blacks; unexpected visits from far-off neighbors who could hardly account for their coming" (Choppin 18), this quote shows how news spread quickly and everyone knew about the secret besides Desiree. "Yes, the child has grown, has changed." said Madame Valmonde, slowly as she replaced it beside its mother. "What does Armand say?" (Choppin 14), shows how even within the first moments of seeing the child, Desiree's mother was able to notice a difference in the child while Desiree seems oblivious.

The Yellow Wallpaper: The narrator begins to see a woman in the wallpaper pattern. Why does she then tear at the wallpaper?

To free the women

Desiree's Baby: Review paragraph 4. How does Chopin describe the way Armand Aubigny fell for Desiree? What figurative language does she use, and what does this moment indicate about Armand's temperament?

When Armand Aubigny fell for Desiree, Chopin describes that he immediately "fell in love, as if struck by a pistol shot," and "the passion that awoke him in that day...swept along like an avalanche" (Chopin 4). The figurative indicates Armand's fell in love at first sight, this shows his impulsive nature. His feelings seem to change abruptly.

Raisin in the Sun: takes the insurance money from Walter and $ from Bobo, runs away with it instead of opening a liquor store

Willy Harris
