Examples of changes of state
Freezing
Liquid changes into a solid; 1. Water is left in the freezer
Condensation
Change of a gas into a liquid; 1. The bathroom mirror gets fogged up after a shower 2. A cold drink is wet on the outside of the glass
Sublimation
Change of a solid into a gas; when some solids are heated, they do not melt into liquid but turn straight into a gas; 1. Dry ice is used to create fog
Evaporation
Liquid changes to a gas; particles with the most energy leave the surface, spread out and form a gas. 1. Clothes are left out to dry 2. A pond gets shallower at the end of a long hot summer 3. Your wet hair dries by the time you get to school
Melting
Solid changes to a Liquid; 1. Ice is left on the counter 2. The ice cream drips down your arm
Deposition
The change of a gas into a solid without passing through the liquid phase; the reverse of deposition is sublimation. One example of deposition is the process by which, in sub-freezing air, water vapor changes directly to ice without first becoming a liquid. 1. Frost forms on the window on a cold day
